Alder Abstracts

As I mentioned in another thread, I went back to the cut stand of Alders today as the light was so good to take a few more shots of the cut logs and trunks. This the first I have processed so far.

Your work is gallery material Pete, FANTASTIC!!! Is carlsberg made rough texture porn..........:D:D
Glad to see you went back Pete, looking forward to more. :)

I think the abstract nature of this is really nice. Without a title I think I would have struggled to workout what it was until I eventually noticed the rings that give an indication it's a trunk of a tree. Quite intriguing.

It's really a satellite image of the Rockies during fall season ;)

Glad Paul mentioned the rings - now I see them and make the link to it being a tree

Again, the colour is insane!

Thanks guys. I'll process a few more this evening. I took a brush with me to sweep off the chips and other debris before shooting this 'stump' again. Helped with getting the abstract look I was after. The light was low and strong and perfect for bringing out the colour.

Yarp I defo like this, Pete :D I've never seen an alder turn colour like this, how long does it take and does it stay like it for long?

Luckily Ina is a timber technologist and so I can get the technical information on the process. It is an oxidation reaction (terpenes and hydroquinones?) and the colour develops as soon as the wood is exposed to the air. It will fade over time as the wood dries and the compounds that cause the colour are leached from the wood or degrade.
