Girl 1aa.jpg

I was photographing some grasses, then behind me I heard a girl crying. I turned round a saw this scene. Luckily I managed one quick-instinct shot before she darted off, shouting "Charlie!!". My original shot is very badly exposed for this scene, and the above was the best I could come up with by using my filters. I'd be happy if anyone else wanted to try to rescue this file. Here's a jpg of the original:

The last for me Rob. I have to say though...it's all about the content vs the process. A perfect focal point. You could also crop the fence if you cared to.

for myself Rob the second is fine, the content is strong enough. If though in this situation and wished to get an improved sky, maybe do a transplant of another sky. But I'd say it is enough as is. I like the fence and all.

I also like the second but miss her shadow.

How about?

Very rough and ready but used the sky from your last image and foreground from the second. If working on a much larger Tiff file and take your time you'd get a decent result I think. This was probably at most 2 minutes. Copied one file onto the other as two layers, then selected the foreground with quick selection. Used rubber to rub out the foreground. No other tones or contrast as it was, so lots to improve on.

In LR I added +100 to the shadows, added a gradient and darkened the shadows a touch at the bottom and selectively on the girl and the trees. I then used a gradient on the sky to drop the highlights at the top a touch. Pushed the contrast of the mid-tones up a touch with a curves adjustment.

Thanks, Pete. Both of you used very different techniques, and obtained a fairly similar result. I'll give it a try with the tiff file. Much obliged.
