Brighton!

Jim Kuo

The man in the hat
Went down to Brighton yesterday afternoon, the beach was very windy, my camera was shaking very violently on the tripod under the condition. It was the first time I felt my travel tripod was inadequate for the job...

A few snaps,

I was attempting a "longish" exposure (2s + ND filter) during day time, this picture suffers from some camera shake due to strong gust + weak tripod...

Thanks for viewing, and any feedback is much appreciated.

The first shot has a surreal quality about in - with the B&W and the way the sign really stands out - did you do HDR or some post processing on the sky?

#2 I like - it has a panoramic quality, and would make a great 16:7 crop from the bottom - loosing some of the sky - you can almost feel the windy conditions!

#3 - I love long exposures on seascapes - love the deep green in the ocean. Not much you can do with a light tripod if it's windy - some folks hang their camera bag under it to weigh it down, worth a shot next time it's windy.

Thanks for the encourgements!

None of the shots are HDR, with #1, I reduced the blue colour in B/W filter to make the while clouds stand out. The sign was yellow and orange, so I increase (or should I say reduce?) the yellow filter to make the yellow sign more prominent.

The beach was vast, #2 was shot at the 200mm end. I have also done the 16:9 crop on #2. It does look better :-)

For #3, I use a ND2 gradual filter to darken the sky, as well as another solid ND4, to darken the whole scene. I set ISO to 50, aperture to 22. Basicallly, everything I could to prolong the shutter speed. Even then, the sky in the original photo still look a bit washed out, but luckily it wasn't overexposed. So I used ND gradual filter effect in LR 3 to darken the sky some more. I did not change the colouring of the scene, but I did increase the saturation and vibrancy to enhance the colours from the original to achieve the final look.

My bag was hung under the tripod. But with the windy condition then, I am not sure whether the bag was helping or hindering in reducing virbrations ;-)

That Brighton Pier sign fairly jumps off the image. Its excellent. And the image does indeed have a surreal quality as Chris pointed out. It's really a wonderful picture I think.
