Cause For Concern?

Sure. I understand. And I agree.

Time for @Hamish Gill to chime in.

Hamish asked us to give Tom D a chance, and I took him at his word. But clearly his prescence has been too disruptive. Something for you to address, Hamish.

But there are other issues, such as engaging shy members. I don't think this should just be down to Hamish. Maybe we all have a role to play. Let's put our thinking caps on about that.

Let me try to take this in a little different direction. I'll tell you why I'm here almost everyday from a positive perspective.
1. The people are friendly
2. The people provide constructive criticism when asked...and encouragement even when not asked.
3. The people are from all over the world with a common love of photography
4. The people show me where they live and travel
5. The people are able to take and give good adult ribbing
6. The people are great...good...trying to be better photographers
7. The people...the people...the people...etc...

Is there a common thread there? ;)

Spot on Sir.

May I add number 8?

8. The people who seriously erode your bank balance by extolling the virtues of certain cameras and back up their extollings with some unbelievably excellent examples. :p

The only thing that saves me Pat...I'm trying to act like an adult on a fixed pension. Note the trying word. :D

All good points.

Could we perhaps consider a Beginners Section of the forum, where people should be encouraged to ask questions like, what does ISO mean? I didn't know when I joined.

And by the way...if that Rob guy posts one more pic from those silly little cameras with that photographers name attached to them...he'll have to deal with the guilt of my complete failure of responsibility.

ahem aren't you guilty of that, telling me about that fuji deal :) I bought an X-A1 based on that lolol

This is a good idea but what I really like seeing in a post is "to get what I wanted from the photo, this is how I shot it (settings, angle, position...) and this is what I did in post to get the overall look" type of explanation. I am guilty of not doing this though, so maybe not good for me to point out...

For me, a good portion of the reason I joined and visit without posting much is because I have no photographic style and wanted to see what style others have and how that fits with me. Copying in a way I guess but trying to get a sense of my own style and what I like to see once it's out of the camera.

Great point Aaron...but you need to know that some of us have no real idea what in the world we (actually it may just be me?) did. I long ago lost the desire to be technically correct...to think about the rules...to make sure I'm perfect. When I let that all go...I started to enjoy photography...and for that matter...life.

And that is a fantastic counterpoint! I'm an engineer by day so the "mechanics" of photography came extremely easy, it's the artistic side that has not come so easily and seems to escape me. This advice is something I will take into consideration.

Just taking a breather Rob.

Just been travelling and chased by customers a lot of late. I'll have a bit more time though over the next few evenings as I fly back to the UK tomorrow. It wasn't planned but the problem with my eye has flared up again (I only got here last Thursday ) so I have to go and see the specialist on Thursday - and he's in the UK.
Damn that's a shame, Pedro. Wish you well.

Ah...an engineer. That explains it. ;)
I was just kidding ya Aaron...sort of. But because I spent an entire career trying to herd engineers as the Technical Program Manager for the U.S. Navy submarine weapons systems...I understand. Here's something that I think may speak your language.

Guilty as charged McM'Lud!

But my excuse is I am an easily led eejit.

(Delighted you like that X-T1, it is a cracker. Any thoughts on the ugly duckling X-A1? I have the X-E1 and am mighty impressed with its IQ.)

Good point. This maybe requires a dedicated thread. It's very difficult for me to describe my thought processes, or lack thereof, but I might give it a try.

Some may consider me a renegade jumping from an xe1 to k30 pentax and back. Fact is, I operate 18 and 35 on Fuji and 70mm on k30 as well as a longer zoom. weather is no longer an obstacle and the crystal clear viewfinder on k30 wins over the Fuji. At darker times the Fuji wins due to its electronic viewfinder that sort of lights up the scene so to speak. The Pentax has a size of a xt1 and is weather resistant as follow focus and 6 pics a second handles well on it. At a price of 450 pounds sterling. Hard to beat that, so you may say I have the best of two "of my worlds." Rules, what rules Glenn?:D

The other is a woodworking forum that I'm a plank owner (for you non sailors...there when it got underway for the first time) and a mod on. Because of my move to the city and a condo...my shop was left behind...and so is my participation on a daily basis. It has...btw turned out to be the largest woodworking forum in the world...with more than 87,000 members and at any given time 5,000 people online from all over the world.
A.

Crickey Glenn @Glenn Clabo that brought a shiver down me ol' spine and reminded me of a misspent period in my life when I subscribed to Sawmill Creek! I really enjoyed that forum when I was an avid collector of Festools and watched, with enormous interest, the heated debates over the merits of the Domino and the Kapex.

Me (Patr) and my trusty Rottie Simou, ( God bless you mate RIP. You made it to 13 years even though you became partial to Festool sanding pads at £32 a pop!) had many a laugh at Rick Christopherson and the gang as we sipped expensive malts and tried to convert folks to a $700 angle grinder which happened to make joining wood easy for numpties like me.

Happy days and thanks for starting such a smashing forum!

Interesting. I can't tell you how many times I've run into people who have stopped me when I'm wearing my Sawmill Mill Creek hat to say how much they enjoyed it. It was a big part of my life. By the way...the owner of the forum just made it through a big heart attack...and is doing well now.
