Chinook Arch

I described the Chinook Arch in another post and this text is a slightly revise version. There is a big one hanging over the mountain front this afternoon. The sun is shining on the snow in the mountains to the west and the sky is blue there but overhead the big gray cloud of the arch is producing a dreary scene on the prairies near my home. The weather guys have issued a high wind warning for tonight and Saturday. Winds are forecast to reach 75 mph at times. That may seem high but it's not all that uncommon specially in fall, winter and spring. Last winter we had a Chinook that blew up to 140 mph in places. It peeled the roofs off of mobile homes like opening a can of sardines.

A Chinook wind in winter can be a good thing though. The term Chinook means snow eater and the warm Chinook winds of winter will really melt the snow fast.

Here's a quick shot the sky looks like right now (Friday October 28, 2011 at 2:00 PM Mountain Daylight Time). It might be rally spectacular at sunset if the sun can get under the arch and light it up!

The view looking west from my home in Montana as seen through my 5DMKII with 17-35 mm f2.8 L at 17mm.

Wow - fingers crossed for a sunset, but that's already looking rather imposing Ralph!

We have Santa Ana's down here - and we have them in effect today, with high wind advisories in the mountains, and red flag warnings for fires due to the humidity being in the low 12% range. Again, typical for this time in the season.

Ralph!! That is the mutz nutz!! The trouble is for me, is that, when I see an awesome sky structure, my iPhone does not do it any justice at all. :)
Moral of it the story............ Take my SLR everywhere!! Lol

The arch moved slowly east and the blue sky was replaced by clouds so no nice sunset. But the winds never got too high either. This morning there is much more snow on the mountains.

Thanks Brian. Mother Nature definitely provides a dramatic landscape in the Big Sky State.
