Demonstration

Lesley Jones

Otherwise know as Zooey
Another one from the Make Poverty History demonstration. It was interesting marching backwards, trying not to fall over, while capturing some of the action. I was very close here - with possibly my 17mm lens on the OM2n. Ilford film, not cropped :)

Excellent photojournalistic image, Lesley! Love it! :)

That 17mm looks cracking sharp. For a couple of months now I have owned an OM-2n, which I absolutely love. I use the Zuiko 50mm a lot, but I also have a 28mm and a telephoto which I have never used and don't remember what focal length it is. I shall have to look for a 17mm.

Very nice Lesley..! Love the impact of that photo, very strong capture. Superb contrast & tones, perfectly printed.

Was it Ilford FP4 or HP5 film ?

Cheers Peter! It would have been Ilford HP5 - there is something about the grain from the scanned film that I adore.

The OM2n has been my workhorse for the better part of 30 years. It's taken images when I have been too tired or cold to think straight - even working when the camera wasn't actually turned on. This lens was actually made by Vivitar. I had wanted something wider than my 28mm and waited around 25 years until someone on our newsgroups at work advertised one that would fit (and that I could afford). It is sharp, but not as much as the Zuiko 28mm. You probably wouldn't want to go photographing any brick walls with this one, but in spite of being very wide, I used it a lot :)

Fantastic shot there, Leslie. Perfect, in fact. The eyes have it - whether on a poster, a woman or on a tee shirt. One of the best protest shots I've ever seen.

Yeah, that's nigh on perfect in every respect that! Was that one of those moments that when you clicked the button you just knew it was right!

Lesley;

As I look at that lovely image more and more I'm thinking that a 17mm lens might project those two girls and their flags with more of a pronounced wide angle (?), I'm probably wrong here but it looks like a 24mm lens length was used...

I wasn't the photographer shooting this, you were! I'm probably wrong, sorry, just thought I'd share this.

No - that's absolutely fine Peter. The trouble with film is that you only have your memory to tell you what lens and settings you used. I only have the 17mm and 28mm and I've scanned a few using the latter recently - no distortion. I noticed a fair bit of distortion on the edge I trimmed away - not cropped, just removing the unwanted rough bits you always get with a scan. I've just scanned some tonight that were definitely taken with the wider lens and oddly enough... it doesn't look that wide. I should have carried a notebook with me... :)

Lesley - based on these images you should get your film camera out, and go and shoot some more Ilford!

Brilliant!
