Flickr Vs 500px

Hi folks

I'm currently putting together a review of Flickr Vs 500px (and any other social share site that you may use...) for our blog.

I was hoping to create a discussion about what sites you use (if you do at all), why you use them, pros/cons etc.

Would love to get your thoughts.

Many thanks

Vicky

Not much help for you review I know but at least it gives the whole picture. I only share images on RPF and I use a pro-Photobucket account (private) for that. My work is also on our own website (babelsberg studio). I belong to the APUG / DPUG forums but am not active and do not use Flickr (I have never used the account I set up), Facebook and Twitter. I have a Deviant Art account but, again, I never use it. I have relatively little time for these sorts of activities and see no benefit from them for our main business (IMSL Director) and for my personal activities I prefer to concentrate on one interactive entity, and that is RPF.

Thanks very much Pete. It is helpful, because it's interesting to know who isn't (as well as who is) using these sites and why they don't (or do) find them beneficial.

Great website btw. :)

I don't use either of those :) I have a flickr account that i think i used once and never quite got the point of it. I share the odd thing on here and facebook(amongst my friends) as well as my own website

I recently moved my public hosting to Flickr after Apple closed it's photo hosting service down.

I find it easy to use with the the Flickr uploader App, but I have noticed that Flickr transcodes my images in order to get various sizes for display, and this can degrade the image quality and show sharpening artifacts in some cases.

Probably not a huge deal to most users, but annoying when you're all about the photography.

Price is reasonable for the Pro account.

I use flickr and have a pro account bur thats due to my btinternet mail account. Never used 500px. I post a good few on flickr for my friends and as a host for linking/posting on RPF

I have an account with both Flickr and 500px. I use my Flickr all the time, and gave up on 500px after a week or two. Why? I use Flickr as a dump for my processed images. I'm not too worried about a very small loss of quality - the quality is good enough for screen viewing by most people. And I use THIS site for the forum, sharing images, feedback, viewing other peoples images, especially the regulars, the more social animals among us. It's nice to support them, help them when I can (not often) and learn from them when I can (all the time). The problem with 500px, for me, is that it tries to combine what I use Flickr for, with what I use this site for, and ends up doing neither as well (in my experience, of course).

Through Flickr I also tried Fluidr and another with a similar name, which offer more options for displaying my images. I have a pro account with Flickr, and have so far not experienced any problems as all.

What would I change at Flickr? I'd like to be able to control the front page of my photostream a bit more, to create a kind of welcome page for my images.

Hope that helped.

Thanks Rob. Really helpful feedback. I like the idea of a more personalised front for flickr accounts.
And thanks for 500px feedback, you're the first person I've met who has used it.

Facebook as a day to day site, and my own site for major topics. I post a new cover picture each day on the Facebook timeline, for example. I use my own site for essays, tutorials and full galleries. URL in sig below.

Vicky,

I use both, although I use flickr with much more enthusiasm. Both are very easy to use (submit pictures to) but I find I prefer the flickr interface and experience a lot more than the 500px one (how either of them handle images really doesn’t concern me as I resize my images before uploading anyway).

I really liked 500px when I first signed up for it but it kind of frustrates me these days because it forever seems to be (& unnecessarily in my opinion) reinventing itself; I logged in recently only to see the site as I knew it a few days previous had been totally revamped... & not for the better either. It’s still a good site & the quality of work on there is very high (although a lot of the work on there is wayyyy over post processed for my liking).

I’ve had a flickr account for over 7 years but only really started using it about 10 months ago. I like the community aspect of flickr the best… but you need to work at it to build a community presence (like any UGC site I guess). I’ve also found flickr great for getting exposure (Getty Images found me through my flickr account) but again you need to be prepared to work at this. I like flickr a lot and will continue to use it as a sort of a blog with regular updates.

As for other options. I use Photobucket solely hosting pictures for my entries to this forum & only ever log into it to upload those pictures! I’m on Google+ and keep meaning to be more active on there (it is, seemingly, very popular with the photographic community). Finally there is, of course, facebook. I read an interesting article once about why it’s a bad idea for artists to showcase their work on facebook so I sort of shied away from doing so (I had other outlets, after all). But there’s no getting away from its popularity so I might rethink that strategy as I go forward trying to get more exposure for my images.

I hope this helps.

Regards,

David M

Thanks Larry and David. And thanks David for the facebook article.

Arr, yes. Facebook. I imagine the new timeline has made it easier to showcase photos?

And Google+ is interesting. We're actually on there and we showcase our photo of the day through it.

Thanks so much for everyone's contributions. Seems I have a pretty good list of social places for photographers.

So far we have Flickr, 500px, Facebook, Twitter, Google+, photobucket.

Keep em' coming... :)

ok to throw another into the mix, I have 3 Tumblr pages... one for general photos, one dedicated to the glen etive road and the other for random nonsense that goes through my mind. it seems to be to be really good for sharing and getting feedback on photographs and also directs people to my site

I use Flickr, G+, and Shutterfly and have a 500pix account (unused) and a few more. Most of my photography is casual.

Flickr:
- I like that I can upload a large file and people can choose what they want from 'all sizes'. I have that limited to contacts.
- Geotagging is great and I find interesting pics using it
- the EXIF display is comprehensive.
- there are a wealth of groups that are interesting (and many more that are not but who cares)
- flickr is well integrated into lots of programs and workflows

G+
- is not really a photo site but it uses Picassa as it's underlying engine. I use it for some very focussed sharing and for blog images (eblogger)

Shutterfly
- I use this to set up event websites (such as weddings)
- I like that they can take on their own life once I step away.
- Many people like that they can get very reasonable priced prints. I like that they do not bug me for that.
- I like that others at the event can contribute and participate but that the individual sites are focussed on a single event and can be private.

500pix - got an account could not see any advantage over flickr for me.
