Galatea

A new arrival to join the Mevagissey fishing fleet.
A new skipper took ownership of the Galatea which was working from Looe in Cornwall up until recently.
The Skipper is waiting on government paper work before they can go to sea. In the mean time they are looking it over doing those small repairs and kitting out the trawler in a way that is good working practise to yourself and crew. The tide was ebbing fast and they wished the vessel to come to rest without the outside leg on and resting in on the harbour wall. Which is why some of the crew are standing on the starboard port :p side.
All went to plan.

This is a typical morning on the harbour when boats have not gone to sea.

Glad to see the water level has dropped now..

Brilliant Julian, can't wait to have a mooch around Mev with our cameras!
Looking forward to it. :)

Be good Dan. For some reason I've been mooching there most days. Good to have a chin wag on the quay side. I've realised there are a lot of opportunities there, more so than when I drive somewhere else, it is just being in the right place at the right time and something comes along.

Nice one, Julian. I like all the activity thats going on and it really portrays a slice of life few of us get to see on a regular basis. The hillside home, one atop another are cool to see also.

Thank you Brian.
This Picture did get me thinking about how to approach more Street/workplace environments. The content such as the main activity, then what could be called the activity going on around that. In this case the dogs, but could be anything. I have done it better in the past but without having that clarity of what makes an interesting social documentary photograph. So even though this is not brilliant it hopefully will give me more to go on next time.
You mention the houses on the hills. Of course these village harbours were built using the cliff face as wind and weather protection. So in this case for Mevagissey the most damaging storms although infrequent are from the East or SSE, which did as well as the contours persuade fishermen to build into the lee of the land , avoiding the Easterly Storms. Yet today many houses have been built on what would of in the past be considered an unsuitable location and both sides of the harbour inlet have a growing population of houses.

Must mention the DP2. On past conversations on here, now having used the DP2, I'd say it is a brilliant camera for this type of photography. Along with the superb resolution , holding up a tiny camera like DP2, which is the size of a bar of soap, no one takes any notice .

Sorry for being late to this party! Really good shot, Julian. It's the kind of shot which might get overlooked on, say, 500px, or some such site, where there are so many glowing fantasy-like images. But one quickly grows tired of them, while this picture holds some interest.

One odd thing...I don't know if anyone else has this experience on an iPad...I have ipad2. When I first look at your image, it looks a little muffled, lacking clarity. Then I saw your comment about the DP2, and I thought, "That can't be right". So I used the thumb-index method of making the image a little bit bigger, just enough to cover the iPad screen - et viola! Superb, clear, beautifully exposed image. Anyone else experience this?

Thanks Rob. I save for web using progressive scan at high quality, if the engine speed on a tablet is not fast it can take a moment or two for the scanning to happen. How this relates to Flickr licked images I am not totally sure, but certainly maybe the issue.

Julian, I've just been in touch with Clifton re the Merry Merrills. No 1 or 3 in stock. I knew I'd leave it too late! There might be a 3 next month, but can't say for certain. They confirmed that once current stocks run out, no more will be made.

I'll start saving for a quatro!

O dear and thanks for the thumbs up.

Edit yes they don't have the DP's at this point but some are on order from Sigma and a few will still be trickling in until the supply runs dry.
Park camera's sell them, but I prefer Clifton as a company, for my reasons.

That is indeed a very fine image and full of interest. And I'm glad the DP2 is working out. Paul at Commercial Cameras might be able to source you a DP1, that's where I got my two.

Now, I'm no nautical expert but, aren't the crew standing on the port side?! ;)

The starboard thing was told to me by a guy who was in the Navy but even so I think you are probably right. The same guy used to spray WD40 on things before spray-painted them and wondered why the paint kept running off! You can't trust anyone these days.

lol yes no flies on Pete, the same as an aircraft :D

Pete thanks for that contact. Problem is I've itched and promised to purchase when they come in stock even though I've not put a payment down. I feel obliged to see that through.
I'll bookmark that site and have a look from time to time.

Jules that a nice documentary image and I like it in mono, looks like you could shoot a series about this boat maybe?
Thanks Nick. Thought did cross my mind. It will be landing at Mevagissey for some years to come so plenty of opportunity from this end. I could go out on some of the fishing boats, but I cannot physically react fast enough if I needed to get
out of a sticky situation so decline if the opportunity is given. Make for some great photos though.
