Girl Seated

I maybe shouldn't like this one, but I do. So there :) She is one of the Security people in the National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh. I thought I'd practise shooting from the hip, and failed miserably. However, I do like the way it came out. I've tried various crops, but this one seems best to my eye. She seemed to be in a dwam, as we say here, a daydream, bored out of her skull, miles away from the room and the hundred or so people milling around. I think I - accidentally - caught something of that, and hope you can see it too...

Shooting from the hip isnae easy, Rob. Its especially harder wi' the narrower focal lengths. A bit easier wi' wider lenses, like 35mm or 28. Even so, I find it hard wi' the wider ones also, and often cut people off. (@Chris Dodkin seems to be good at it, though.)

I can sense that dwam gaze in this fotie, Rob. It comes through.

I like it Rob - agree it's a tough thing to crack, but digital allows you to just keep shooting until you get a keeper - film, not so much

Also having adjustable ISO on digital allows me to dial up a fast shutter speed in any conditions, and assist in shooting whilst in motion

But then I miss these unexpected artistic opportunities, so there's clearly no right answer
