Go for the studio

Dan Down - The Steampunk Womble
I've had a bit of an inspirational text message today, and its a bit of a wake up call.... (you know who you are ;) ) I need to show more of my ideas, show what I can do, hopefully inspire others, and most of all, show confidence in what I do. At the end of the day, why take photos for only one to see!! So, I'll be on a mad one with the posts soon . mwahahaha!!! but only when I get these wedding pictures finally completed, however, for now here is what I have to share with all.
Its my Farther in laws 60th birthday this saturday.
For a gift I decided to do a canvas shot of his two granddaughters, my daughters of course :)

This was not done in any studio at all, in fact this shoot was done in my living room!! Shot and PP'd on monday, ordered canvas by tuesday, received today. not bad for a service. (canvas was printed at Kestrel Gallery in Sidbury Worcester if anyone is interested, extremely reliable, inexpensive and trustworthy service and the print is the bee's)

I'll tell you a bit about the layout as best as possible (wish I'd of taken a pic of the set up to post with this thread)
Mantle piece covered in a white table sheet (backround) and cushions layed on the floor and covered with a white bed sheet.
So thats the frame. Now Oly was placed on a tripod about a meter high with shutter remote plugged in. about another meter to the right (photogs view) tripod, Metz flash in slave, 20" diffuser brollie, (useful hotshoe/brollie bracket used)
2 meters to the left and a meter forward, tripod, 1m2 silver reflector. The reason why I used this is that I don't have another flash to use, so in order to minimise shadowing I used this alternative instead. work a treat to help bounce the flash discharge to the other side of the girls.

Flash output 1/30
Focal length 20mm (on the Oly that is, so thats 40mm I believe)
ISO 200
Shutter 1/60
f/4
Auto WB
and alot of waving around and performing silly acts in order to get the children laughing. so yeah, those expresions on their faces are more like...... "Silly Daddy" hahaha!!!

Carried out alot of PP on these. especially as the backround sheets were creased to buggery. so, plenty of de-clarity was applied over about 5-6 times in light room (better than an iron of course ;) ) tone curving and sharpness adjusted.......... DONE!!!!

All this from start of the 'studio' setup, packed away (so little hands could not destroy), and the final result within about 60mins. I must admitt, I am chuffed that it comes to show an acceptable result can be achieved in your very own livingroom, or in fact anywhere you want.

many thanks for reading and viewing :)

Oh, just thought........ Maybe a square crop for the B+W what do you think?

I like the first, has a very 'parents and Grandparents would love these' feel to it....I think I may have had a similar convo with the same guy today and promised to post something too

This is one of several I did at a 1 off Single mums event run by the County Council a couple of years back

Haven't done Babies since............oh too much like hard graft...........

Nice Dan and I'm sure he'll love them. Well what do you expect me to say, of course square would work!! Seriously though, I think it might suit these well with the strong bleed to white, even with the colour shot, to make a pair. What size are they?

Very nice mate
I especially like the black and white one!

Good work Kev! Love the expression!

As you probably know I'm all about the baby/youngster photos at the mo!

Nice work Dan, and a great idea for a gift.

Getting kids to stay still long enough AND look at the camera is a real skill - I gave up years ago with my granddaughters, and just try and get them in candid moments these days.

I like the colour shot the best - nice diffused lighting, and that catch-light in the eye that really adds a sparkle. The brolly and reflector set-up worked a treat.

The white blanket in the foreground makes a nice vignette - great work with the PP on the backdrop

Even with studio flash, getting a backdrop to wash out can be a challenge!
