Hardest possible subject - self portrait

Hi all,

I thought I would start a thread in here about self portraits, I personally (and quite ironically) hate having my photo taken as im not the most photogenic lol its why I like landscapes :D

Anyhow, I have decided that I would get a few self portraits (not a phone at arms length!) and then run them though lightroom so that I am happy with them. Also means I can do a few effects on them.

If anyone else has some self portraits post them up in here :)

Anyhow, here are the ones I am ok with:

Difficult, isn't it. Good shots there. But what are you trying to impart to the viewer? The 'thinking' posture with the hand on chin...the camera looking upwards. I prefer the black and white version of the first pose - I say version, even though they are different photos. But the third, to me, is more interesting. The composition and toning is great. It's more confrontational - straight to the camera, the blank stare, the half image. I really like it.

I'll add one later.

Thanks Rob, its not really a photo I have taken much lol the last photo was what I was aiming to get but would try a few 'normal' shots as well lol :D

I like this idea! And your right, it is very hard. Me personally, I'm definately not photogenic at all.

I mean look!

It's not good is it?!

I had forgot about that image Dan, not sure how!

Dave, I say good on you for taking on such a challenge. While all of the photographs express your anxiety of being photographed in such an intimate way I think the last image does it the best. Instead of hiding behind your hand you are confronting the camera by looking directly at it but you have still hidden half of your face. It make a much more interesting image.

Great minds thinks alike David.

This I'd taken over a year ago. I like what you've done!

the orb comes from the ringflash modifier, which doesn't really fit the front standard of the camera

Notice the running similarity here? All these photos have the face either fully or partially obscured. To me it shows just how hard it is to be comfortable with a photographic self portrait.

so very true and yet, we happily expect people to jump at the chance of being photographed
