He's going all analogue!

Just stick and old filter covered in vaseline over the X-E1 lens and you're there Rob ;)

There's no getting around the fact that digital has its appeal for some subjects. In my own case the dance shots I've taken in recent months were digital and for me it works well for these events.

However, for me digital has no strong appeal for other kinds of shooting. Yes, I shoot the 7D for other things too from time-to-time, but often the images seem too antiseptic somehow. Too crystal clear back to front, side to side. I think that's a little of what Rob is getting at when he describes his XE-1 image above as having "no atmosphere."

Please understand that I intend no disrespect to any one on RPF for indeed, you all produce stunning digital images so often.

So, Rob, I'm with you.

Hmm... I'm reviewing many of my images, and I like some of the digital ones, and I like many digital shots by other photographers (many of them on this site). But I've really come to love film. There is a sheen which I can't match with my digital shots. I was doing a lot of digital manipulation, though not as much as many folk. It was fun, but ultimately not fulfilling. I'm enjoying film a lot more, and experimenting a lot less - though not totally giving up on the digital darkroom. Some of the film shots benefit from the equivalent of dodge and burn, darkening, etc, but they still manage to look like film, and that's the key.

Within the hour Linda and the kids and I are heading to LACMA (the Los Angeles County Museum of Art) to see the Kubrick exhibit. My dilemma is what cameras. (Of course!) Its between the Minox and the XA for 35mm, and for medium format its between the competing Mamiyas: The C33 or the 7.

Film:
-Ektar in 35mm and 120
-Across 100 in 35mm
-Fomapan 100 in 120
-Portra 800 in 120

I'll take all the film. I'll probably take the Minox.

Still totally undecided between the C33 and the 7.

Digital hasn't entered into my thoughts except to mention that I'm not taking it.

I'd go with the 7!

Actually I have great sympathy for what is being discussed here. Although I am shooting much more digitally at the moment, my true love is for film. And when I shoot / process, it is nearly always with an analogue look in mind (and probably why I use cross-process and various grain effects so much).
