I once had a discussion with a mate about Johnny Cash, their argument was he wasn't the best singer, my argument was with Cash it was a much about attitude as it was about singing

I agree he wasn't the best, but he wasn't far off........lol i really like how deep his voice he went, yes he had personal issue but so do many other famous people / singers

I have to say Hurt is a total heartbreaker

Agreed, did you see the video to that on youtube, how old and unwell he looked was unbelievable........!!

I have a project manager working for me, who's dad was the agent who arrested Johnny Cash for drug smuggling in El Paso back in 1965.

He found 100's of pills in his guitar case after a tip off.

I think he has made some great songs even up to the point just before he died. Apparently he was quite prolific right up to the end. The old chestnut about artists not being the best singers, etc is a bit of a moot point really. How many allegedly best singers actually produce anything you want to listen to? How many allegedly not so good singers produce something that you will listen to and like for decades?

Absolutely , Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan for example though I admit I am a fan of the singers as well, Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, Ella Fitzgerald and Big Maybelle for example

Big Maybelle's version of Hound Dog puts Elvis to shame. To Paul's point, and Davie's response, Dylan was the first name I thought of.

Do you mean Big Mama Thornton? though on the original peacock label it's listed as Willie Mae Thornton :) I have the original 78 and 45rpm's from 1953 and play it at my club regularly

Well-caught, Davie! I did indeed mean Big Mama Thornton. (I was so excited by the nature of the discussion that I got carried away in my enthusiasm!)

If that's the kind of stuff you play in your club I must visit!

I love the BM Thornton version too, but who is her guitarist? Beautiful snakey lines around her voice!

I once had a guitar student who was VERY high up in the Scottish police force, who asked me to teach him to play and sing like Johnny Cash, so that he could do a spot at the police Christmas charity concert! The Man In Black joke. I said, "I can teach you the guitar parts in half an hour, but as for the voice...there are these little pills..." Luckily he saw the funny side!

i have a suspicion it was Buddy Guy Rob, always brings the house down whenever I play it :)

here's a link for those who don't know what we mean
