Kit lens or prime?

Hi all,

After going out around London today I found that I was reaching for my D3100 rather than my FM2n, the 18-55mm kit lens seems to be pretty good, however its largest aperture is f3.5 with it going to f5.6 minimum at the zoomed end.

I won't really be able to afford a wide prime lens for the D3100 as its a DX sensor it would need to be down at the very small end - the 18mm is 27mm equivilent. I will therefore just use the kit lens if I am after some wide shots where I would probably be running at a smaller aperture anyway which gives good results.

I am looking at perhaps getting a 50mm prime lens for it - need to check if the '50mm' lenses are 50mm or the equivilent of 50mm. I would need a 28mm prime lens for the D3100 to get a slightly wider normal on the camera for 'everyday' use.

I will be looking at getting one of the Sony NEX cameras soon as I know I can run loads of different adaptors and I have a fast f1.4 50mm M42 lens already so I could use that.

My question is, should I look at getting an AF prime as well as the kit lens on the D3100 or just stay with the kit lens?

This is an image using the kit lens, its pretty good, but as the aperture is quite wide its not very fast meaning I can shoot wide open and get as much bokeh for some creative shots. I wouldn't be looking at anything like an f1.2 but just a normal f1.8 which are pretty affordable now - looking at the 50mm f1.8D but might look at a wider lens at 28mm due to the crop factor, although fast wides are expensive.

I had the chance to shoot with a 35mm 1.8 the other day (works out equiv 52.5mm) beautiful lens to shoot with and not that expensive at £130-140 new on ebay so not a lot more than a 50 mm (and that is a A-FS DX lens so will go with your 3100)

Thanks for the input guys, that 35mm might be a good lens to go with, I don't feel that I will really be going for a full frame DSLR any time soon due to having 'full frame' and larger film cameras, if I needed the extra resolution I would shoot on a film camera - hence my question regarding a MF film camera.

The main issue I have with the D3100 is the fact that it can't meter with non CPU lenses - I have an AI 28mm and a pre AI 35mm plus the AI 50mm E series lens, but I have no metering on the camera when using them - I am not worried about using manual lenses, its more the case that I don't want to keep having to bring a seperate light meter.
