As some of you may have seen I have bought a 55-300mm lens for my D40 and so my 55-200 is now being made redundent!

The body of it is in good condition, but im 99% sure the VR dosnt work as having it on while on Dartmoor made shots worse and it slows the shot burst rate down a fair bit. Is there a proper way I can test the VR?

So what would you guys do stick it on Ebay and see what it goes for, or put a classified add up for a fair bit less than what they are going for, which varies quite alot from what ive seen?

I like the local option - over here I use Craigslist to post to my local area

That way the buyer gets hands-on and agrees they're happy with the lens before they pay and take it home

With EBAY, you have the possibility of them not liking it, and the hassle of PayPal/returns etc after that.

As a buyer, I like local for the same reasons - I get to try the lens before I buy :)

That makes some sense Alastair. For panning you need a lens with Active VR such as the 70-300MM AF-S. Normal VR will try to compensate for the panning motion and make a pretty bad job of it. Active VR has no effect on horizontal movement to overcome this problem.

How does the 55-300 compare in this respect ...
Does it slow things down at all

Paul is right, active is a lot more effective for panning!
