Discovered these through a link I was sent the other day. I particularly like these shots there is something very peaceful about them ... not surprising really, they are places that are normally very busy presented as completely empty.

I found this particularly interesting as it was something we discussed in a few threads a while back
firstly in Jim's thread about http://www.realphotographersforum.com/general-discussion/2875-10-stop-nd-filter.html
and then when he put it into action http://www.realphotographersforum.com/general/2921-street-emptying.html
and when Dan rather successfully managed to completely clear the m5 motorway http://www.realphotographersforum.com/landscape-architecture/3744-where-has-world-gone.html
lets face it though, Lucie and Simon have taken it to a whole other level ... very inspiring i think!

This is a whole new level!!
What AMAZING work there, great find Hamish!

These remind me of Louis Daguerre's image of the Boulevard du Temple--I think that's what it's called--which he took in 1838 and is said to be the earliest known image in which a human is shown. When Daguerre made the image the streets were teeming with people. But the only one who appeared on the slow emulsion plate was a guy who was stationary for long enough.

I wonder how they done it. Did they get up very early on Christmas day or photoshop the people and cars out. I know the Fuji HS10 has a feature that allows you to take a long exposure photograph that it will automatically delete anything that moves in the frame.

I assumed they used two exposures. One very long to eliminate anything that moved and a shorter one to capture an occasional person, blowing newspapers etc and then overlad them and painted through the deatils they wanted. There are a couple of what look like 'ghost-like' artefacts here and there.

Really makes you look - stunningly beautiful, yet very spooky

Mmmm - looked through the gallery and I think the vast city expanses work really well - the closer shots of people by buildings less so

The closer shots look like normal shots, taken on a quiet day - it's the city vista shots which really take your imagination on a ride
