May Company Building

East corner.

Built in 1939-40 I believe. May Company was once a department store chain here in the Los Angeles area. The company went under in the '80s I think. This building, an example of "Streamline Moderne" architecture (thank you Darren Bradley for acquainting me with this style) is more famous for the design of its west corner, which stands at the intersection of Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue. However, on the day I was there I was unable to get a picture of the famous part.

Anyway, the building is now owned by LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art) but will be (or perhaps has been) purchased by the Motion Picture Academy, who plan to use it as a museum.

Mamiya 7 and expired Kodak Portra 800 film.

Great photo, Brian. And it's nice to see a less photographed part of this building. I'm very familiar with it, too!

Thanks Darren. By the way, I had a glance this evening at your blog about Bill Krisel. I didnae read it all the way through yet, but your foties are wonderful as usual.

Thanks, Brian! I just replied to your note about the Tiki Architecture post on my blog. Glad you like! Appreciate you stopping by.

Oooo, I do like that a lot Brian

You and the Mamiya are a great match

Very nice Brian! Very nice indeed! Doesn't look like being out of date has punished the film too much eh? I must try the 800!

great shot! I love curved buildings! it almost looks like a submarine.

I didn't intend to comment on the Tiki in particular, Darren. I intended to comment on the blog as a whole. (But the Tiki stuff is great, too!:))

Thank you, Chris. That particular Mamiya belongs to a friend. I think I might have to save up and buy one. I love that camera.

Thanks, Hamish. The film seems OK. I didn't expect good results, since the person I got the film from (5 rolls) had noted "Deep Fried--Expect color shift/grain" on the box. However, looks like I got lucky. Thanks again, Hamish.

Yes,...Or the prow of a big ship! Thanks Andrew.

Worth saving up for I'd say - you seem made for each other

Simply wonderful Brian.

My Mamiya 7 is back from being serviced and sitting behind my desk at work just crying to be taken out. Which it will be soon! :)

Just send that Mamiya 7 my way if you don't want to use it. (I can help you with the shipping cost if you need me to.;))

Anyway,...thank you for the kind words Pete.

I like the way you placed the building, Brian. Start and end points are meaningful. :)
