New Flickr layout

I haven't had a proper look around the new Flickr yet, but it certainly looks like a drastic change for some unknown and spontaneous reason.
For those who use flickr.. Share your opinions here.
I'm sure there will be plenty to say.

I joined Flickr a long time ago, but hated the look of the pages, so rarely posted to it. Joining was mostly about having access to features when viewing work of friends. Some months ago, I uploaded a bunch of my Facebook timeline cover shots, but pretty much forgot about them.

The combination of large areas of white with magenta/pink and blue type looked like they were created by a programmer—not a designer—writing the page in a text processor. The style still remains on many pages, but now photographs are easily viewed without the distractions. I have not checked the appearance on a small monitor, but the opening page opens impressively on my large monitor. A click and they come up in fine resolution against a non-distracting black background and another click presents a full 2560×1600 slide-show. Higher resolution images present very nicely.

Having a terabyte of space, clearly there is no need to compress to the point of JPEG artifacts, and I can certainly size them to fit the largest of monitors. The early FB covers were sized to 1280×475, and they clearly display their lack of resolution. At 2048×758, they look great. If I actually start using Flickr on a regular basis, I will re-crop to 2560.

In all, it finally feels usable. I have my own web-site for major topics and keep it rather formal and impersonal. Facebook is for the day-to-day images, and is my personal presence on the web. I will certainly reconsider using Flickr as a place where I can post high-resolution images that can be easily linked and shared here or in other forums.

I was a bit shocked when I saw my flickr site late last night, and wasn't sure if I liked it. Still not sure, but that may be because I'm resistant to change, especially unannounced or prepared. The free TB of space will be welcome, but I had paid for a Pro account - unlimited. I got an email from them this morning saying I can transfer to the Free account before August 20. Weird.

Last night I was too sleepy to do anything about it, and this morning I'm too sleepy to do anything about it. Where's my coffee?!

I'd be interested to know how intrusive the adds are on a free account if anyone is using one?
Im pleased that someone with at least a hint of design skills has looked at it ... We use it for work an recomened it to clients so it will be easier to sell them on it now.

I use the free account, but I've always used the browser plugin "AdBlock" to hide the ads, so I've never seen them.

Pro Account: Unlimited Storage, Ad-free, Detailed Stats

Free Account: 1TB storage, With Ads, No Stats

I have just over 2,000 photos there, with over 36,000 views - wow, never knew that. But apparently I never look at the Stats, so why pay for them? I think the ads things is important - anyone have ads on their Flickr pages?

I usually use Flickr as a dumping ground, and it's useful for sharing images at RPF. My better images I transfer to 500px, and that is where I direct people.

Comparing the Flickr Photostream with the 500px stream, I still prefer 500px. And with 500px I get a showcase 'Portfolio' site.

And then there are times when I wish I had no images online!

Need more coffee...

I will check mine tonight, only just signed up so still getting my head around it, one annoyance is the lack of easy share links like Photobucket.

there sharing links are via the little box with an arrow coming out of it in the bottom right of any picture. just click the grab html/bb code tab

Photobucket had a major facelift a few weeks ago (it had been optional for about year) and I didn't it like very much. Mainly this was because I had to re-learn how to link images. Once I had worked that out and reset the interface to make that process easier it was fine. That is all I use it for and there is no public face to my galleries although the new look is probably more nicely designed.

I'm not sure what to make of it. I prefer the full images nested together. I had a break from Flickr for a while and when I came back the Explore section had changed to this view, so I'm used to it now. I don't like the sets though as they are cropped to a square format and in some cases the point of the top image is lost. I feel they need space. After all - I chose to put them in separate sets for a reason. The text on top of the sets looks terrible on my little monitor.

I'm not entirely sure that I'm using Flickr properly though as I only mirror the images I have on my web site (and at the same size - 800 pixels). I don't shoot much and I display even less. I have a free pro account because we are with BT. I do worry about my back ups sometimes, although I have a little terrabyte drive off site. I'm wondering if I could (or should) be putting up the full size images of my favourites. Can I mark those as private and are they safe? There's also the problem of our bad connection speed. A 300+ Mb file is going to take forever at around 250 Kb. Any thoughts?

Its the reason why I got a Flickr account, as soon as I upload an image and go to gallery its gone, its now arranged by 'story' meaning that if you have used a different camera or have a different file naming convention its gone to a random page - there are about 90 pages on mine so its impossible to find again.

I use multiple cameras and have three libraries and that works fine. I switched the basic settings to show thumbnail and IMG code only and that makes linking quick and easy again (although the auto-copy is now gone in that view). It is all set to private view only and I only use it for the forum and a couple of other web uses. My main portfolio is displayed at the babelsberg studio website.

I don't think there are any unlimited accounts now.

Certainly not going down very well with a few :/
140/365 - Bring back old Flickr | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

Silly people ... Just the sort of people that moaned about the Internet when it first came about, the iPhone, digital cameras are rubbish too ... Anything that changes anything is crap.

Change, evolution, development all positive things, scary sometimes, but that's part of the fun ... If I was Flickr I'd tell them to go find a ****ing quill and some papyrus and write to someone who gives a ****!

Well said H,
I use the iPhone Flickr app, and to be fair it's almost the same.
It's amazing the amount of hatred against the change, even to the extent that people have closed their Flickr account down.
Change is a good thing.
I still haven't used it properly yet.... Will have a bash tonight.

Interesting , I am on BT and had to pay for my pro account, prior to joining BT. I wonder if I need to pay to keep the pro account running? But I have just got myself a new free account and put ADBLOCK on the browser, I cannot distinguish one from the other. I must try and find out what MB my pics use, it must be a long way off 1TB.
