D800 or D600 ?

Is there much "real" difference ?

Dave

The new Nikon D600 digital camera is a compact full-frame DSLR featuring a 24.3MP CMOS sensor and an EXPEED 3 image processor. It is said to be capable of capturing virtually noise-free imagery from ISO 100 to 6400, and has expandable sensitivity from ISO 50 to 25600.

It features Full HD 1080p video recording with multiple frame rates, manual exposure control, full-time continuous autofocus, dedicated headphone / microphone jacks and the ability to output uncompressed 8-bit video through the HDMI port while recording.

A 2016-pixel RGB sensor provides accurate, intelligent exposure metering in conjunction with the 3D Color Matrix Metering II system for consistent results.

A 39-point autofocus system is also employed to acquire precise focus, which is further enhanced by nine cross-type points and seven center points for use with longer lenses and tele-converters. The D600 also features a 3.2” 921K-dot LCD, a continuous shooting rate of 5.5 full resolution FPS and it is compatible with a wide array of NIKKOR lenses.

Additionally, the D600 is compatible with the optional WU-1b Wireless Mobile Adapter for Wi-Fi connectivity between the camera and your smart phone or tablet. When used with the Nikon Wireless app, it lets you control your camera from your mobile device.

The D600 is available as a body only or in a kit with the AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR lens.

mega pixels, 51point vs 39point focusing system and physical size
the d600 is also seemingly slight faster frame rate ...
d800 has a full mag alloy body ...
cant think of anything else

Can't really see the point then ?

Sounds like a good time to look for a used D700 if you want an entry into Full Frame!

thought i read the d600 had an inferior autofocus system (compared to the d700) which allowed for the smaller body, but can't seem to find that link now..

edit - sorry, it was the d600 compared to the d700.. but the guy also compared the d600 with the d800 in the next blog post.
d600 v. d700
d600 v. d800

I might be tempted to swap the d700 for a d600 you know ... The idea of a much smaller lighter body is very appealing!

I've merged the d600 threads (hope you don't mind Dave - just made sense to keep it all in one place)

I'm cool, still struggling to understand the difference. Yes small points, but who wouldn't by the D800 ? But reading here I can see why some would.

I'm in the Press enclosure for the Finish of leg 7 of the Cycle Race tomorrow. My D700 isn't going to look as good as the D3's and D4's, but everything else is big!

Update: DxOLabs shows the D600 to be second only to the D800 and D800e over all cameras in terms of overall image quality.

Blimey
