Remote Viewfinder and Camera Control

I had a look for remote triggers and have also been looking for a remote viewfinder if possible for a D300. Being reasonably tall it helps to get low shots or a different perspective. There is an Android app for Canon, if I recall correctly, but not one for Nikon.

This company has a connected and wireless version, they also have a fair range of compatibility for Nikon and Canon. They also do a few other nice accessories.

Aputure Limited - Gigtube Wireless Digital Viewfinder

As nobody has developed an iPone app yet for my D300 that does not requies a laptop I might take a serious look at this if I can find a dealer local to me.

Another possibly cheaper route that potentially offers more functionality would be to purchase a decent tablet PC (or iPad) and one of the better tethering softwares. I think the bonus of the PC route is that almost any tethering software will be compatible with a tablet. The free tethering software that you can get is not bad but may not offer all the functions you want. LR has tethering but as I discovered you need a pretty fast laptop for it to be usable and tablets are not built for processing speed. This would not be a wireless route though and you would have to put up with a flimsy mini USB plug sticking out of your camera (you can buy right angled ones though). On the plus side you can back up, review and PP your images, possibly useful if your on holiday. My laptop is slowly dying so I have been looking into what might be a good choice for tethering. Personally I would favour a form of remote EVF with a largish screen over a small one.

Now a remote EVF where you can touch the screen to select the focus point would be something wouldn't it?

Hi Pete,

Yes the Capture One tethers via a laptop. There is also an Android app out there that allows you to tether direct to a Canon DSLR (it was posted somewhere on here I think) which is interesting.

This gadget is a direct device as far as I can tell, no laptop, that can also control some of the camera's features.

I have sent them a mail to see if I can find out more. I have a pdf manual downloaded which I need to read through.

Hi Paul,

My ideal would be similar to yours. A Tablet PC or iPad with remote link (wireless or bluetooth) and the touch screen fully enabled! I also like the larger screen. However, as you say most tablets do not have the processing power or equally important memory to handle large RAW files. Touch screen to select focus point............great idea.

I would expect that within 5 years all those problems will be sorted.

someone should just invent the bit to go one the camera and talk to an iphone instead of proprietary screen... I dont know why this hasnt happened yet!

I was / am looking for something for remote viewing .
When I go to Mexico , there are a few birds I would like to shoot .
I planted a humming bird / butterfly patch .
I think it is body heat — if someone is close to plants , they just vier off , If camera is there they don't care .
A remote - They are either behind the leaves or not in shot .
A couple of humming birds , a red bird and a yellow one that has bluest wings .

At 200 from amazon , - I will check locally . [ OK add 20 for - do this and this - set up this way - easy return policy ]
Do I want that or the 1.4 III . The viewer is cheaper , but knowing canon ,they will raise the price of the 1.4 III .
Not really sure which one I would use the most . I am not a fan of leaving the camera unattended .
I do set up the tripod and hang bag from it sometimes [ out of way - in a corner ] but most of time I am wandering around shooting candid shots at parties and when I borrow some one else memory cards to copy - my brother / nephew grabs camera .
I could see setting this up behind the alter at a wedding for different shots
I would like to hear from someone who has and uses one .

I probably won't get one for at least another month , if at all . [ having knee replacement tomorrow ]
I compared the price to the 1.4 because I have learned things abandoned , the company dies — for what ever reason you cannot get them anymore . [ 1.4 = 500 +tax TO 2 to 2 times 200 = 400 + tax locally . If camera store does not carry target drug stores is supposed to ]
The Bramper is an example [ I missed that one ] . Another is the digi-mate - I had learned by then and got 2 . So if I get one - I would use for a week , then order another one .
I am going to post on another site , someone should have one .
