Lots of lovely old steam trains @ the NC Transportation Museum, Spencer NC.

It was a miserable, cold, wet day - so perfect for wandering around a large, somewhat run-down industrial site, and taking photos :D

that is nice! i think i'd enjoy that place!
thanks Hamish - really reminded me of steam railways I visited as a kid back in Blighty
Really nice Chris. There is something about those amazing machines, eh? Well done...love the feel.
Thanks Glenn - yep, amazing technology
Gorgeous Chris and I love the subtle lighting. If only the one in Babelsberg was in use still.
Thanks Pete - this one is part museum and part restoration workshop - so 60 % had workshops with locos in various stages of restoration. Huge project
Another stonka from Chris, its all I can do to stop myself shouting "Cheeww Cheeww".
Thanks Paul
love the b&w.
Thanks Beth, had to be b&w :)

Nice. Love the lighting from the windows.

I never knew this place existed until your posts. Next time I'm up that way I'll stop in. I noticed your shots there are wide open (I'm sure due to low light) - is there a problem using a tripod? It doesn't look like there was much visitor traffic.

I realize my question about the tripod might be misinterpreted - I was curious about whether the museum had any policies about using tripods, not questioning Chris why he didn't use one.

:D :D :D - sorry, have been catching up after being on the road all last week in NC

No issues using a tripod at the museum, plenty of space and I didn't see any restrictions on camera gear.

If you're doing a pro shoot - eg with models, then you have to pay them a fee for using the facility, which is fair enough.

I was over in NC on business, so only had the two lenses (23 and 14) and my table top tripod - so really wasn't very well equipped for the dark interior shots. Good test for f/1.4 though!

Certainly worth a visit with the full kit and tripod - acres of engines and stuff to shoot - some sunshine would be nice next time though!

Great - I am definitely going to put this on the itinerary when we go back up to SW Virginia next summer. I also need to revisit the Transportation Museum in Roanoke, VA again (N&W HQ - last major RR in US to run steam). Was there years ago.
