The Big Boys

Enjoyed a spring hike yesterday up Clary Coulee west of my place. The snow was firm going up. Got to spend an hour or more watching these big boys on the slopes up high. They didn't seem to care that we were there.

These were cropped pretty hard to get in close. I was using a 70-300 zoom. A better lens and a tripod might have been nice. But, in this case, anything is better than nuttin.

Pete, you can tell we didn't have as much snow as in a normal year by the red wind burn on the trees.

Now those are some horns!

Nice one Ralph - 600 f4 next time?

Tripod and my 5D MKII might have been nice too. These were shot hand held with my Canon XTi using a borrowed 70-300 zoom (non L).

I imagine a 400d and 70-300 is a lot more viable than a 5d and 600mm on a "hike"
My fave is the lesser close in one anyway, I like the context and the way they are both not in the snow!
Works for me ...

Hamish, you're right about the 400D being easier to carry. And when my friend carries the longer lens it's even better!

I so much prefer the images I capture with my 5D MKII though that I'm willing to carry it and three lenses on long hikes and backpacks. The equipment does kind of slow me down some though.
