What A Birthday............!!

Well you may or may not know but today (17th Jan) was my birthday, had a good day planned, off to Manchester with friends to see family, then off for a nice meal out down town, before returning back to wales at the end of a very long tiring day.

Stopped off at Jessops on the way in Wrexham to pick up a new camera bag (was bought as a birthday present) in the shape of a Lowepro flipside 400, must admit its brilliant, so lightweight it untrue. So loaded all me gear into it and carried off to Manchester.

Got to mums, opened my cards & prezzies and had a good chat, before I headed into Manchester city centre for some photo therapy. Was doing really well, bag was well comfortable on the back, was getting loads of street photos, using canon 7D & 70-200, and my fuji x10. After about 2 hours and tons of mooching about it was time for a cuppa. I then notice my shoe lace needed doing so leaned forward…………now the next part to this story was a bit of a blur, I don’t remember much apart for a heart wrenching slow motions style sickly feeling as my canon slid off my shoulder as I leaned forward to tie my lace, THUD as my cam hit the concrete floor ………….i think I really did stop breathing for a moment or 2, before casually picking camera up and walking off, I found a quiet place to examine the camera, which seemed fine, PHEW, then lens however is reallllly poorly, the plastic rim near front element was squeegeed quite badly I guess that took full force, no probs I can live with this, the front element was fine, I then discovered the zoom ring was Very tight to move…………….GUTTED, it did however still work, but there was obviously something really wrong, I nearly honestly cried, birthday or no birthday I was heading to local train station to jump under the next tram lol.

I sat down and gathered my thought for an hour before realising I never renewed my camera insurance…………GUTTED take 2………I eventually decided to take it into local camera shop which is London camera exchange, so they have sent it off for me for inspection to see if it can be repaired I soooooooooooo hope it can and reasonable cost as it cost me £1700. GULP so will just have to wait and see.

Now it was time to go for tea and meet up with everyone, we booked in to “Red Hot World Buffet” in town, 7 of us, I have never been before but It was brilliant, they serve food buffet style form Indian, oriental, English, Italian, tex mex, it truly is good place to dine with plenty for everyone. After dinner the waiter brought me a birthday cake with candles, and a restaurant seating around 300 people all sung happy birthday, I was soooooo embarrassed, apparently it was my nephews idea………ickle git.

I opened some more prezzies, 1 being a cokin ND filter kit that I had wanted for soooo long so I am pretty dam chuffed & can’t wait to play with it.

Well, happy birthday Daz - and don't worry, your lens will most likely come back as good as new.

I dropped my 17-35 L and had the same tight zoom issue, which turned out to be the zoom barrel which had deformed during the impact.

Repair was a couple of hundred $$$, which was not what I wanted, but still way cheaper than a new lens.

Repaired lens is like new - so chin up old chap!

Nice bag BTW!! :)

Great story Darren! PMSL throughout it!!
Thanks for sharing.... And good luck with the lens repair! :) :)

Sounds like you had a fab day even though a nasty accident happening to your lens, no doubt it will come back good as new though, (cant believe you let your insurance lapse though you dimebar, shakes head) but onwards and upwards we learn from mistakes as they say innit.

I am glad you posted a pic of your prezzy the filter kit, you now may be able to answer me a question cos I have been toying with the idea of ordering a set for a while,to change from my screw in styled, except for my B&W Nd 1000 which I love, am I right in thinking this kit needs an adapter ring so it will fit to camera? If I buy one mine will be attached to a 58mm thread as its that lens I tend to use a lot for waterfalls and landscapes, and then I presume if I wanted to use on a lens with a larger thread I would have to buy a second lens adapter depending on the thread size is this right ??Look forward to reply to help me decide lol

Happy Birthday and thats a good looking bag :)

Really sorry to hear about the lens,

I did just the same when my 70-200 2.8 IS was brand new, ( a long time ago, early in 2004...) it was the first time it had been taken out in the wild.
I bent down to tie the laces on my walking boots while on the side of a small mountain on the Isle of Mull, Scotland, camera swung forward and the front of the lens bashed into a rock at speed :(

Luckily the lens had a filter fitted and lens cap was on, when I unclipped the lens cap some glass fell out :( luckily it was only the filter glass :)
Lens was OK and we enjoyed the rest of out holiday.

Cheers guys & gals :-) & thanks for a hint of hope Chris, i have got everything crossed lol.

You are correct Laurie, all you need is different sized filter adapter rings, about £7 on amazon or ebay, 1 for each different lens diameter you intend to use the filters with.

I cant wait to have a go at them.

Major bummer about the lens damage but as the others have said it'll be like new when you get it back (bet your wallet will probably be a bit lighter too).

Apart from that sounds like a good day:).

I always put my strap across body and shoulder, stays put them and easy to take shots, but suppose depends on size of person and strap

wish i was using the black rapid Laurie, would never have fallen to the ground then........

cheers for info Darren, I am deffo thinking of getting a kit just need to get two adapters then as its two particular lenses i would use the filters on, I will keep my screw in type though as some of them were quite expensive for what they are and doesnt hurt to keep them somewhere safe does it lolol

OMFG just got the quote back.............GULP

seems pretty much trashed inside by the sounds :( they want £750 to repair it. As opposed to me shelling out £1750 for a new one..................!!

Oh no!!! That's bad news Darren. It would seem logical to get it repaired... That's coming from me who ent got £7.50 let alone 750!!! Wish you all the best in that decision mate, wouldn't like to be in your shoes :/

I feel so sorry for you Darren. I think I would have definitely cried breaking the lens and I would probably cried again at the repair price:(.

Small consolation I know but it'll be like a brand new lens if you do get it fixed, but it sounds like you normally take good care of your gear anyway, so it was probably like a brand new lens before the slip:o.

If its any consolation Darren, that lens is worth more than my entire signature......... :/ :D:D
