Zeiss 50mm 1.4 ZE

Jim Kuo

The man in the hat
I have been wanting to upgrade my Canon 50 1.8 II for a while. After weighing different 50mm options, finally decided on Zeiss 50mm 1.4 ZE.

Pretty happy about its performance so far :)

Thanks :)

I am impressed by the image quality as well as the build quality. I am relatively new to photography, the hood that comes with the lens is the first metal hood I've ever seen!

Very nice, I nearly bought the 85 at one point but went with the Nikon for convenience of AF
I think Pete has the 85?

Metal lens hoods are a nice treat when buying stuff like this, bit more weight, but a lot more feel of quality than the average!
The 85 Nikon is a metal hood too...

Looking forward to seeing more shots!

Will do :)

I often go out with only a 50 prime when I am feeling lazy, so it only makes sense to replace my super light weight Canon 50 1.8 (130g) with another better optic but lightish lens.

I considered the Sigma 50 1.4, however at 520g, it's even heavier than my 17-40!

There aren't too many options if I want low weight, there are Canon 50 1.4 and this Zeiss. I also want the hyperfocal distance indicators, so the Zeiss becomes the logical choice.

I'd love to be able to justify some new manual focus glass!
The last I bought was a 35 1.4 for my voigtlander r2a ...
One of these...

Apparently there is some relation to the ziess kit, although I'm not sure they are made to the same level I think they are made in the same place... I don't know this lens, but if it's half as good as my 35 voigtlander it will be a very nice bit of kit!

As Hamish says, I have the Zeiss 85 f/1.4. Like the 50mm it's very nicely made (by Cosina to Zeiss specification and using the T* coatings, except for the UW which is made in Germany) but not quite up to the German Zeiss lenses. I also own the Nikkor 85 f/1.4. Interestingly, they have a slightly different focal length and, overall, I find the Nikon has a touch more contrast and sharpness at f/1.4 but it is marginal (I suspect the difference in the coating).

Are you going to get around to doing some comparative shots for us then Pete :)

Yes that's right isn't it ... The voigtlander lenses are cosina made too aren't they!
In fact now my brain has kicked in I remember the voigtlander brand is actually now owned by cosina isn't it ... I'm pretty slow after doing a wedding, it makes my brain melt a bit!

I did make some Hamish. That's why I know they are different focal lengths. I'll try to sort them out next week.

That's right, Cosina license the Voightländer name from Ringfoto. They make some of the Zeiss lenses and the Ikon body also.

Went out and took a few more pictures with this lens, I think I got some pleasing results. These are crops of various sizes.

I found out it was quite a challenge to get accurate (enough) focus at f2.8 manually.
