And with the money for the ring she acquired at the same time her expenses over the summer must be pretty well covered by now.

Second hand LX3 ticks all the boxes you can buy one for around 80 quid exceptional lens, produces very nice images even if your a beginner. I bought one for my girlfriend to take to New York she came back with some rather good images.
