My good friend Gary sent me a link for this one - his son is a 3D game graphic designer, and this article describes techniques that game designers use to create realistic depth in their graphics.

The great thing is, these techniques apply directly to photography as well.

There are 8 methods of creating depth in art, photography and film. In this article, we’ll review each of them in depth, with examples, some pitfalls and suggestions.

  • Depth by Atmosphere
  • Depth by Color
  • Depth by Linear Perspective
  • Depth by Light
  • Depth by Shadow
  • Depth by Solidity
  • Depth by Focus
  • Depth by Movement

Really good read with some stunning examples to illustrate the techniques.

Well worth a read - I'm going to see if I can apply to my images and think about the techniques as I visualize shots and compositions.
