Davie's Fault - Straight Out Of The Camera

Rob MacKillop

Edinburgh Correspondent
I saw Davie's out of the camera thread just before I set out to edit my morning's catch. When I tried to edit them, I saw his big head appear before me like a ghost...it was shaking from side to side, and I'm sure I heard a 'Tut, tut!".

So here we are - straight out of the Fuji XE-1, 18--55mm lens. I've only edited the size.

The River Almond in Edinburgh was in full spate this morning, and looked quite dirty.

The sad news is that I accidentally deleted half my shots! They were on the memory card in two folders, and I highlighted both folders, and dragged them onto my hard drive. I saw them both download. But when I came to edit them, only one folder was there. A mystery. In the meantime, confident that I had downloaded them all, I emptied the memory card...Alas!

Don't blame me lol the only reason i put them up straight from the camera was to have a look at the picture quality .... it won't happen often believe me

Very nice set Rob - love the toffee look to the water as it goes over the weir, and the lovely autumn colors of the trees

Lovely blur on the water - what shutter speed did you use to get that look?

On shots 1 and 4, there are square blocks cut out of the rock wall - any idea what they were for?

Also - love the comp and framing on the last shot

Nice images Rob, certainly caught the murkiness of the water very well there. Shame you lost the rest of your images.

As an aside, I read somewhere one should always delete and format SD cards in-camera to maintain the file integrity so that's what I do now. It's a good idea as it means if you check your images on your computer before using the camera next time and finding you have got a transfer issue you still have them on the card. ;)

Chris - Thanks. Toffee, eh? I met one pro photographer on the track who was bemoaning the fact that the water "looked like shit" - and he refused to take any photos. Professionals, eh?!

Shutter speed was 0.5 seconds at f22, ISO 200, using the T stop. I didn't want it too milky. The flow was too fast to get that lovely shower effect Julian got the other day.

I noticed those square cut outs, but have no idea what they were for. There has been a lot of activity on that river over the millennia, and I'm sure someone must have written a book about it - I'll look it up. A decade or so ago, some of the bank gave way, falling into the river, and out popped a carved Roman lion!

Dave - thanks for the tip. I'll try to remember that. I've spent the last four hours trying to recover 20 shots - they'd better be worth it! Still in process... It should have been done by now, but I made a couple of mistakes with the software install. Tip: read the bloody instructions!
