I like the fact you have taken and posted both versions of the first compo ...
Which do you think is most successful?
I'd definitely go with the second!

Hamish - Sometimes a distant focal point turns out better... but in this case I agree that the 2nd compo brings the prickly feeling closer to the viewer, and much more impactful.
