Err 01 Communication between Camera & Lens

i have got this error message asking me to clean contacts between cam & lens.....!!

sometime it works sometimes it dont, it happens on more that one body using same lens

when IS kicks in viewfinder goes dark & flickers (sometimes at random)

It just wont lock on focus (sometimes at random)

It happens randomly but very frequently regardless of mode, aperture or shutter speed.

The lens in question is my "Canon 17-85mm Is Usm"
(thus going buying my new lens as i was in a bad mood.....lol)

Does anyone have any suggestions.???

Is it goosed or worth sending out to get repaired if that is at all possible,

Is this the only lens causing you problems?
If so, I'm assuming you cleaned the contact thoroughly on that lens? A good rub with an ink eraser or very fine sandpaper usually works.

If that doesn't cure the problem, talk to Canon and see if they will give an estimate on repair. That should help you make a decision on whether or not to repair.

Give "h lehmans" a ring ... They are very good and you can speak direct to people who do the repairs (i think - that might be just a service to shops) unlike with canon direct...

As Ralph said - use a typewriter eraser to clean the contacts - if that fails, talk to Canon.

How do you feel about that cost then ... It's prob not far off what they would all charge ... Baring in mind it's prob worth (working) £175-£225 ish ... You might get £125 for it in it's current condition on eBay! ...
