Hi it's Oscar I am a bit stuck I always hear about people talking or using the phrase f stop aperture and all the manual settings such as PASM and what does all these phrases mean as I am getting a new dslr hopefully in the next few week and I f I knew what it all means it would help also does anyone know of any videos on YouTube
To illustrate what all the terms mean could somebody help please

Thanks
Oscar HJ

P= Program almost auto but with a slight difference

A= Aperture priority you set the aperture the camera decides the shutter speed

S= Shutter Priority you set shutter speed the camera decides aperture

M= Manual where you decide both with the help of a light meter

Aperture the lower the number the less depth of field or the less area in focus

The aperture is the area of the lens which is open so the lower the number the higher the speed but you do have to be careful to get the depth of field you need as well or the area of the shot thats in focus I'm sure if I have made a mistake somewhere someone will put me right

Aperture: The opening in the lens that allows light to reach the film or sensor. High number (f16, f22, etc.) equals small opening, and that means the lens is letting less light in. Low number (f1.4, f1.8, etc.) equals large opening, and that means the lens is letting more light in.

Here's a great intro to aperture

that's a great idea Chris, watching vids IS the best way to fully understand these different aspects of photography then Oscar can go try for himself
