I don't think you should blame yourself Hammer.

Hamish,

Thanks for the opportunity to give some input into the future of this web site.

I agree that the blog section did not get off the ground. Most of us that have posted entries do our blogging on other sites. It might be worthwhile to encourage people to post links to blogs that may have educational or information more as a resource rather than a place for any dialog. I'm not so sure that a topic based library of information provided by users might be very helpful. I think there could be ways to motivate users to post more tips, techniques and ect to make it a good place to learn and get new ideas.

I would also consider making it very easy for users to link to other photo sites and social sites. Young people today really love to mix it all together and get things done quickly and easily. They are our future and I think we need to be looking for ways to attract young people interested in photography.

I like that this site is more focused on photography and less on technology. I do think a resource to to link to popular tech sites and equipment sites may be of value and to help people find the information they need quickly and easily.

You may want to take a look at how users post photos and receive feedback. I think there is room for improvement there. The younger generation isn't big on writing long comments but if it were easy to respond with a click or two they just might do it. If a photo posted requesting feedback where in a window designed to give feedback I think a lot of visitors would make comments instead of just browse.

The photo editing folks might enjoy a forum that has a window setup to show the posted photo and modified versions posted by viewers and a little information of the software they used to edit it. That forum should come with the disclaimer to allow other to modify the photo without owning it or the edited copy.

Video is becoming more popular all the time and you might think of developing a greater presence there. I know it isn't a big draw on this site but again it how easy it is to use that makes it popular.

I think a place for those with web pages to post links and info on their pages as a resource may be more desirable than posting galleries. If there is good meta data about each site it could be easily to search for different type of photos.

Thanks again for your dedication to making this site a place where real photographers can connect!

Dennis

I would like to see tutorials and blogs by pro's like Hamish on understanding modern dslr's.

One "traditional" internet way to organize unstructured knowledge (tips, resource pages, etc ..) is using a wiki (the kind of technology behind wikipedia).
In a friendly community, it usually works very well; for those that do not know a wiki, is essentially a way to write a web site collaboratively ...
So, it may be an interesting technical answer to a number of suggestions we had in the thread ...

Maurizio

Good call ....

Any new/recent members? Id love to hear how you discovered the website and what the draw was?

I found this site/forum when I was looking for info on the Mamiya C3, I think it was yourself that had done an informative write-up on it.

Why did I join RPF, there doesn't seem to be an elitist atmosphere like the others I'm a member of, its more a forum of ' I've taken a picture like this, lets see what you can do' atmosphere which is a good thing because people then go out of their creative comfort zone and try something new. A section on 'How I did' might be something to think about.

I will only post something when I feel it might be of interest to rest of the world or I feel I have achieved a personal milestone in my learning process, at the moment I'm trying to get my head around doing 'digital pinhole photography', once I've achieved that I'll post it if I think its worthwhile.

That's all from me at the moment.

Haha ... ive seen that list before ... its good though, and quite amusing in places.

found it

No , different list , but thanks . I copied it and pasted it in word . Now to go thru and add ones I don't have .
Mine [ which was someone else's that I added to ] is / was only 8 pages . The one you posted has 11 .

For me, I do visit the home page, all be it to click the number (usually in the 100's) at the top. I only use the forum part of the site the rest of the time. I know I don't comment all that much but I do read the majority of what on here. I love this site because there is no ego behind what people say, and by that I mean that everyone is friendly and all are treated as equal regardless of knowledge or ability. It's that sort of atmosphere that inspires people to improve their photography. When I first joined I had a DSLR that was shooting 100% of the time in auto, couldn't have even told you what aperture was, now I am able to shoot fully manual. If I had joined any other forum with that lack of technical knowledge I would have been torn to shreds. Looking at others work and having comments on mine has improved my understanding of composition and ability to compose a huge amount.

As for the site design, I say loose the galleries and blogs, get people to add their personal ones held else where (flickr,500px etc) to their profile or signature instead . Keep the home page, and just have a list of the last 20 or so most recently active forum topics.

Also I like the Hugo High Fives, make sure he stays.

We have a plan ...

Basically, the front page is going to go. for the time being anyway.... it will in time be replaced with something a little more slick! We are going to upgrade to the new version of vb and ditch a lot of the features that go unused.

There is going to be a new brand, and the forum is going to be the key to the place! More effort will be put into making sure the forum element runs as smoothly as it can!

I should just say now that this is likely to cause some upheaval ... we are looking at doing this mid-late august. the site might be down for as much as a day, maybe a little more and when you come back. It is going to be a very different interface. Im saying this now to prepare you for it ... If you are the type that doesn't like change. this is going to be a shock to the system!

Are we all ok with this as a brief outline of a plan?
