Yeah, d3000 is probably a safer bet now ...
gind your self a tamron 18-200 lens to go with it and you will have a really nice set up there for not a lot of cash at all!!

I have been looking and am now planning a D3000 with kit lens this month (18-55) allowing for crop (24-70) then next month look for a 70-300 (100-480) zoom and if I can find one a 35mm prime(allowing for crop 50mm) I already have bag and as most of my photography is outside I dont see the need to rush to get a flash gun anything else I should be looking at getting ok I am going to have to get filters for the lenses (that is a given) the 18 to 200 sounds a great idea Hamish :o

I used to have the D3000 and found it a pretty good camera. I had the 18-105 Nikon kit lens that was decent too but it had some odd lens distortions and after a while I began to lust after a faster lens. You may want to consider getting the Nikon 35mm 1.8G. New they are around £160-£190, used not much cheaper as they seem to hold there price well. You could get an older manual lens or an older AF lens without the built in motor but as the camera doesn't have the focus motor built into it you would have to use them manually.

They do a 18-270 too ... Probably cover most of desired range ... Add a 35 1.8 afs and you will have a really nice kit :)

Btw, the crop factor is 1.56 ... So a 18-55 is more like 28-85 ish :)

Thnks Paul one thing about going with a DSLR is it can be expanded and if I go with Nikon most Nikon lenses fit to be honest the chioce of a manual or auofocus 35mm at the moment is still something to be thought about the kit lens will do the size so its really an extra I would like and if its better leaving it or a month so I can get the better lens I will

I did think about the 18 to 270 myself hamish and if I can find one it is a good idea the reason for even thinking about a kit lens is availability (most as its an entry level Dslr would have been sold with the kit)

After investing in a DSLR and choosing a kit lens over a prime and then buying the prime later on, if I had to do it again I would buy a DSLR and a prime lens. Of course this is just my personal preference and buying a kit lens certainly wouldn't be a mistake. At the end of the day it's personal preference but what I think I am trying to say is don't write off a fast prime lens over a kit lens. Internet prices are lower but this is where even though you may pay a higher price in a shop overall you can end up paying less overall because you make the right choice for you first time. You can try stuff out and if its a good shop the staff will give good advice. Do you have any camera shops or at least an outlet so you can try different lenses out close to you?

I have the D3100, I have the kit 18-55 lens, I also have a pre ai 35mm lens, its manual focus etc and no metering (as my D3100 doesn't allow for non CPU lens metering). But having the 35mm lens anyway gives me a 50mm equivilent, I also have different lens adaptors which means I can connect different lenses I own lol to be fair though, people knock the kit lenses, but out of the box its pretty useable. I know when I was out shooting around Matlock with my FM2n with a 50mm lens on it, it wasn't wide enough. Whereas my girlfriend had borrowed my D3100 with the kit lens and could get all the shots wanted, its quite hard to find a wide angle lens for a crop sensor without it being very expensive.

One of the reasons for a kit lens is for wide angle down canals which is why I was planning on the kit lens over the prime

Must admit lookin on ebay some people need to research the price better I could buy a new 3100 with kit lens and a 70-300 nikon zoom new for what there asking lol

Yeah, it's a bit like that on there nowadays ... Buy it now prices are sometimes so wildly inflated you wonder why people bother listing things at all ...

I suppose some idiot might buy it !! but not this one I think this is the one thing about researching properley I couldnt believe it when someone was trying to sell a D3000 with kit lens for nearly £600 Buy it now being the only option I also noticed tht even the auction ones are not really moving that fast

Well after looking a bit at CEX website the D40x comes back into the reckoning

CeX (UK) Electronics, Photo & Video, Digital SLR Cameras

after finding this on there website

Yes, CeX offer a 12-month warranty on all products excluding consumables.
This warranty covers all faults arising during the course of normal use, and does not cover physical damage or water damage. Please view our Terms and Conditions for further warranty details.
If your item develops a fault and is covered under our warranty, please follow the details in our returns procedures [listed below]. Please note that repairs under warranty can take up to 28 working days.

This makes it a lot better value than it first looked in the shop when I saw it as getting a warranty would make even the cheapest ebay item worse value

Another alternative is MPB Photographic, their prices are "correct" and the kit is always better than described- I'd buy from them again.

D40x is £129
