I just got my wife a Nikon D60 and a loaded camera bag.

Color fringing OK. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromatic_aberration
I doubt we would use a Nikor wide angle enough to justify the price.
If that changes when little monster gets into sports or we should go to Dubai where architecture would really demand it,well get one.
I'm sure a good AF-s Nikor wide angle is not a cheap date. Before I do that a nice 85mm prime lens would be a better choice for us right now.

How do you feel about prime vs. zoom lenses?
Primes seem to bring in more light, for indoor use. OMG look at the price!

This is not so bad.

Wow! I'll be exploring the second hand market for those kinds of lenses.
I would rather buy stock in Nikon, they must be doing better than U.S. auto makers.

Best way mate... buy stuff when you find a need for it ... i often hear of people buying stuff just because they think they want it but then never use it

the lens you have will show you how much you need extra wide by how much you feel you want to use it ... if you use it a lot ... then its easier to justify the price of somthing better

well yes... that is a lovely lens ... as you may have worked out i have something very similar ... i have the old AF-d version which can be had for £600 S/H
You could also look at the f1.8 version for probably half that money!
not bad really considering the fact you only loose 2/3rds of a stop of light!!

BUT... BIG BUT... NO AF ON YOUR CAMERA WITH THE ABOVE LENSES ... the 85mm you linked to is the only one that will af with your kit :(

As far as i am concerned there really is no argument about primes vs zooms ... primes give more light as a rule (certainly wide - moderate telephoto) and are more often than not better quality ...
Zooms are more versatile ... pay your cash - accept the compromise ... end of!

have never used one... have been told and read they are very good for the money ... that would be my recommendation for a first prime lens really!

read this

expensive ... maybe ... **** hot ... i would have thought so!!

just remember ... your camera will only af with "AF-S" lenses ... af/af-d will work electronically speaking but not af!

Hamish,I think we have plenty of kit for now. She has an AF-S 35mm prime, a 55-300mm AF-S zoom,18-55 AF-S zoom,a macro lens kit of 3 adapter lenses that fit on the 35mm and the wide angle adapter lens that also fits the 35mm prime.
She is overwhelmed as it is. I am trying to speed learn and pass it on to her. Thanks, for so much good advise.

Hi Jeff,

How are you passing on your new found knowledge to you wife? My eldest daughter (she will be 16 next week) is learning and any tipe would be useful. Her birthday present will consist of a Nikon D100 (spare battery), Tamron 28-200, Nikon 35-80, bag, polarising filters, UV filters, cleaning kit................not very patient father!
