The fact is, coming from that forum, I would have assumed that among “colleagues,” certain playful experiments would have been welcomed. Clearly, they’re not — because real photographers tend to have a rather significant ego.

That's sort of what I thought too.

That said, I don't view our little group here as any more real than any other online forum.

While I believe that we're all serious about our current and past photography, I don't think there are (m)any professional photographers who have time to participate in online discussions. They're all busy working.

That doesn't mean that the dozen+ who post here don't have egos...

What an interesting idea. Would there be support for something similar on RPF?

When Hamish set up RPF he wanted to create a forum centred around respect and decent behaviour (having been a member of several that weren’t). As an experiment he insisted that people could only join if they used their real name. On the whole it has worked although the name, Real Photographers Forum, can be interpreted as slightly elitist and even a bit arrogant. We have retained it though as the ethos behind it has served us well.

The only thing I feel which may drive people away is bad language directed at someone.

I'm afraid that I'm guilty of that and that's why we no longer see Rob MacKillop around.

I wouldn't claim that I was as active there as on other forums but I did spend time there browsing.

I think that the "open source" crowd would lean into assuming permission to edit what somebody had posted.

On the contrary, they are quite insistent that an image posted for editing is posted with a license that allows editing, for example, CC-BY-SA-NC.

On the original topic of the poll, I think everything depends on whether the OP requested constructive criticism. If they didn't, then the yap stays shut. Full stop.

If they did, then the key word is "constructive". It's OK to say "if you cropped here, you could get rid of such-and-such distraction". It's not OK to say "this is boring" or "this sucks". If someone actually thought that there was no hope for the image, they would not likely have posted it.
