Medium Format Newbie

After a year of stockpiling vintage viewfinder 35mm cameras (bad case of GAS, but at least they were cheap), I've gone and bought something that takes medium format film. It's nothing flash - a Lubitel 166b - but you've got to start somewhere...

Does anyone have any pointers? Any particular films I need to get or just start with anything and see how it goes? Any recommendations for development by post?

Any advice gratefully received!

I've recently started shooting MF with as Fuji GS645S - and have had decent resulst with Ilford FP4 and HP5. I;d love to start developing my own but for now I'm sending them to Ilford Labs for Dev and high res scan.

I'm undecided whether to shoot colour or B&W at the moment, as B&W often costs more to process, but if Ilford do the whole thing for £15 including postage both ways? that's very interesting...

For b&w I use this guy - http://blackandwhitepics.co.uk
And for Velvia - http://www.e6processing.co.uk/pricelist.html

No complaints so far. I love medium format photography, and I think you are going to love it.

Those both look good Rob, thank you. The 'colour' people scan as huge TIFF files, which I like the sound of.

I enjoy 35mm a lot, and in a year I've ended up with almost 30 cameras (some of which will be finding their way onto online auction sites soon), I dare say in a year's time I'll have a huge collection of medium format cameras!

Update: I've got 5 rolls of Velvia and 3 rolls of Fomapan on the way. That should keep me going for a few months.

The Lubitel is a trip - just slow down and take your time with exposure/focus etc - it's all on the photographer with the Lubitel!

I have the same model - great fun!

I have a great photo of Hannah and Connie is some woods with the background swirling like crazy ... I'm not allowed to post it though as Hannah thinks her bum looks big (it doesn't)

I get crap from swmbo all the time for not taking 'family' photos, then when I do, she vetos them based on how she thinks they make her look - :(

I got crap a few weeks ago from SWMBO, who couldn't understand why, out of the thousands of images I shot from January through December 2013, she could not find a single family picture for our Christmas card.

It's here - I just wished I'd thought to ask if the take-up spool was included...
