I bought a mount cutter set on ebay that included a plastic cutter, a cutting matt and the guide ruler. The cutter was terrible but I then managed to get a used Dexter mat cutter on ebay for about 9 quid. They are excellent. Cutting the mounts well is quite easy but marking the right size cutting lines is abit hit and miss for me. If I am tired or get interupted while marking it tends to go very wrong. It is still a bit hit and miss for me though, you really need to plan the image and border size (made by the matt) properly or it doesnt look good no matter how good the image and the cratsmanship of the matt cutting.

I got the Logan Compact Classic, think the model number is the 350-1 and it'd relatively straightforward maybe I just got into it after dong 50 or so of them lol. There is a square Ribba Rob, a 50cmx50cm deepset one... I have 2 in the exhibition

Davie, I had a look at both the logan 350 and 301 and they both look excellent and easy to use. I might get one as the Dexter cutter is good but only if the ruler doesnt slip, and then it all goes horribly wrong. TBH, that is probably more of a case of me being careless.

Iwould still recommend the Dexter cutter as they are small and can be bought cheap used. They are really good quality too. Rob, in case you are interested therebare currently 2 Dexter cutters on ebay for beer money.

I really hope the show is a success Davie.

For what it's worth I too bought a Logan compact mat cutter and it's very good although I like large borders on my mounts which can be a challenge sometimes. But I can whole heartedly recommend the product. Easy to use and reliable. No risk to fingertips either!

Those Ikea frames sound cheap but as ever with Ikea they are not suited to UK sizes. 20" x 16" is a good standard mount board size which isn't quite 52cm x 42cm so if I I use that size to fit the frame I then have to create another mount for club competition (unless anyone can think of a crafty way round this).

to be honest Mike I never even looked at the mounts, unwrapped the frame and binned it straight away then bought 2 pack of 10 Daler Rowney antique white A1 mount board and made my own

I am getting drawn to cutting the A1 boards but my problem will be getting a reliable 90 degree cut! It really is a nuisance having to use 20x16 for the club when really I want larger sizes for A3 prints. Still onwards and upwards!
