You might have noticed me banging on about my new 30d with scratched sensor here http://www.realphotographersforum.com/content/586-how-identify-dusty-scratched-imaging-sensor-lens.html

Well since its quite a monumental thing for me to now be on both sides of the fence I thought i would celebrate that fact by taking a few shots of it and with it

here it is with my new 50mm (thanks again Peter)... look how dark and foreboding it looks ;)

and here it is with the reason I wanted a canon attached to the front of it ... an m42 lens ...
DSCF1006.jpg

see, you cant fit m42 lenses on nikons and retain infinity focusing ... the flange back distance is too long!

This was taken with the above combo ... Asahi 1.8 lens

welcome to the dark side Hamish, these images are looking good to me, what's your opinions on the camera & IQ comapred to your Nikon gear?

Daz

dunno mate ...
Impossible, and i hasten to add probably pointless speculating about ...
this fits between my 2 Nikons anyway ...
Probably better than my nikon d50 and definitely not as good as my d3 ;)
As much as I do fly the Nikon flag, until you get to bang up to date, low light capability from ultra high end models I dont think it really makes much odd which brand people go for ...
Canon have more lenses, Nikon are better for low light and feel more solid in the hand ... thats sort of the way I see it

Slippery slope Hamish, next you'll shooting a 5D2! :D

SWMBO has a 30D - although she doesn't have the scratched sensor modification ;)

Can't really complain for the money you paid - I bet a round of beers costs more than that these day?

Congratulations!

I also have a 30D (without the sensor modification :D). Apart from the crop factor and weaker high ISO performance, it's actually a more responsive (much faster burst mode) and lighter camera than the 5D2.

The 50 f1.8 is a nice performing lens for what it is, despite its physical limitations.

Priya shoots Nikon, so I understand and appreciate the appeal to be able to examine the gears from "the other" side closely. Enjoy :).

I find the speed of focusing on the Canon is usually faster than Nikon, however, the accuracy is another story ;).

Sure, it was my personal impression on the gears available to me. It wasn't a blanket statement on the entire product range of two brands.

Apology for not being clear before :).

I never knew you didnt lose infinity focus when on canons!! i've got some m42 lenses, including a zeiss 50mm 2.8 and a pentacon 50mm 1.8 - as great as they are for close up when used on my nikon d40, the infinity focus issue is just terrible, - i shall be buying a ring at some point for my eos500n , Even though i use my nikon f75 for film now i'd probably use my eos a bit more if i got some nice glass for cheap well effectively 3 lenses for £2

Good effort on the canon purchase. I'm a little jealous even with its modification. I have to say I agree with the comment about the 50mm being very quick to focus, but I too have been finding it's accuracy is a little off at times. Did a few shots with the lens over Christmas and found that some were off on my desired focal point.
