Since we have a lot of music fans on here i thought this might be a nice idea to start a thread to explore photography and artwork of album covers

thought this one might appeal to a few members

and on the subject of burning people ... this classic rage album with a photo of a burning monk ... which is really as about as emotive and shocking an image i can think of on an album cover ...

the clash - london calling ... i really like this photo

The use of that image by "Rage Against the Machine' has always annoyed me a bit - somehow such a self sacrifice seems rather demeaned by such a use.

The Penny Smith image on London Calling is just one of those greats though. I seem to remember that it won best ever rock photo last year in some sort of 'competition' didn't it. And Pink Floyd have used the same graphic designer (Storm Thorgerson) for all their albums since the first couple and they are all pretty interesting.

I agree with @Pete Askew's opinion of the shot used by Rage Against the Machine. The monk's sacrifice is trivialized for cheap shock value.

I think this thread is a good idea @Hamish Gill. Looking forward to seeing more submissions.

A thread from the grave here ....

I jst like this cover ... Really nice double exposure (I think)

Your sort of music id have thought @Chris Dodkin ?
Very nice effect - will be trying some double exposures on my instax, as it's a 'feature'

Not heard of this band - will check 'em out

I often thing "album cover" when shooting in square format. It's maybe why I like square format so much - spent so many hours staring at album covers in my teenage years. I'll have a think. Can we add images of our own that we think COULD be an album cover?

Rob, you could do some covers for your own albums and premier them here;)

Album cover art work is something that really didn't translate well to the age of CD and now digital. Kind of sad. I'm a big jazz and classical fan. I would recommend this book to anyone really interested in photography. Blue Note had some great covers/photos (and some great music too):

Here's a good article on Reid Miles with some covers:

Not a photo but - one of my fave covers from my youth :)

For those not familiar - one of the variations is the South Bank Show theme :)

This was a fave too - with it's cardboard wheel that changed the images in the cut out circles as it moved around...

Great Idea Hamish, I'm heavily into music alright, I've always loved these album covers (and bands);

John Foxx -- 'Metamatic'

Japan -- 'Gentlemen Take Polaroids'

Roxy Music -- 1st album

Jethro Tull -- Thick As A Brick

I could list MANY more, these bands I've listed above opened up the world to me, very inspirational music wise.
