Something wrong with my Hexar...

It's usually very reliable, but here are some images, actually the best of the bunch (which isn't saying much) from a roll of Delta 400.

Ilford developed the roll, and sent me the negs. I scanned them at 300dpi with Epson V550. They look awful.

What has gone wrong?

And now I'm confused about scanning values.

The same image, one scanned at 3200 dpi, one at 12500 dpi. Both reduced for jpg. The one at 3200 has more detail than the larger. My eye was drawn to the more detailed low-res image, and for a moment I thought it better. But after a while my eye preferred to rest on the smoother image of the larger res. It's a funny old game.
