dont go for the sigma one, some of the models (including the one I got) isn't sharp on the 300 end

Thank you all - great advice! I think I need to try a few lenses out and see what 'fits'.
We'll be on private drives with a good firm in Tanzania, who apparently have a reputation for getting close the action, so to speak, and so I hope that a decent 300mm will be enough.
Time will tell
I'll let you all know which lens I get if I get some good photos
