walking around Manchester this week i did a far bit of shooting from the hip, now i am very new to this but it was fun. Compositions is pretty diabolical, I really need much more practice, as i found it isn't that easy to get a decent composition when not looking through viewfinder............

Thought i would share regardless

I wouldn't have the guts to do this sort of thing so well done for giving it a go...lol

... this is why i want the x100 so much ... i dont think people will be scared of it

nice efforts though ... although im never sure how i feel about taking photos without actually looking through the viewfinder ...

I also dont have the guts to take such photos of strangers....

The unusual angles make them interesting and sort of random which fits the theme.

As Hamish says a small camera will be less intimidating, although the X100 might be a bit wide angle maybe?

I agree with you guys. I am awful at street photography, and I think it's at least partially because I don't have the nerve to walk up to people with a bazooka (yes, people tend to react to DSLRs as if they were bazookas, or at least assault rifles). So bravo for having a go at it. I'd love the X100, yes. The price is a bit steep, alas... (though quite reasonable when compared to an M9, I suppose...) Kai on DigitalRev just reviewed it and that guy is the master at street photography. Check out the video if you haven't already.

I love Watching Kai on Digital rev hes brilliant............!! In fact i think i have watched ever vid they have made......!!

I would love to also have balls to do proper street photography, problem is if they approached me, which wouldn't be a problem but if they had an attitude & question me i have a short temper & would probably get arrested for assault........haha

That why i tried the shoot from hip approach..........lol

I am going to buy the canon G12 compact, its much more compact, shoots raw, is affordable & i reckon this would let me get better street photo pics, more discreetly, the swivel out screen i also think would help ALOT........time will tell i suppose.

try it first darren ... it might do raw .. but the small sensor is always going to be a shortfall ... you would be better with a panny gf1 or sony nex if you ask me ...
i have officially given up on all compact cameras unless they take film or are built into a phone and there for convenience ... anything else just doesnt do it for me quality wise ... and apart from anything ... i personally like to be able to have a least a slightly narrow dof once in a while

i was looking at the panny gf1 does this have a bigger DSLR like "cmos" sensor or equivalent

I'm with Hamish on this one. I played with a G11 out in Palm Springs a few weeks ago, but the small sensor just drove me nuts and I handed it back to its owner willingly.

Its the "4/3rds" sensor Darren so it's a 2x crop factor ... Same size as in all Olympus DSLR's
You can buy mine if you like ... I'm raising funds for the x100 I've frivolously ordered :)
I wasnt going to see it so soon as hannah likes it... But she will just have to use the nikon d50 if you are interested in having it off me!

In a few years the only thing that will keep compact camera on the shelves are the massive zooms they can fit into them due to the tiny sensors ... IMO of course ... But I bet I'm right! :)

what are you trying to sell me Hamish i am a little confused........lol

mmmmmmmmmm i really wanted a flippy out screen..........!!
