it was bit blowy yesterday but not looked out yet but sounds calmer today. Should get some pics today

Nice one Allan, cult classic you got there!

It's a fully auto camera Brian with aperture adjustments for flash use...

They are fully reliant on the sielnium cell working (bobbly light meter around the lens)...
To test...
Wind the camera on so its ready to shoot
Set the aperture ring to "A" for auto,
put your hand in front of the lens,
put the camera up to your eye
Press te button...
You should see a little red flag pop up and the shutter not fire!
If that happens the meter is at very least active ... If its active, it should be accurate enough to use!

To test the shutter
Select 2.8
Open the back of the camera
Hold it up to the light
Press the shutter
If you see it open quickly and close quickly it works...

Beyond that testing gets a little complicated and isn't really worth while ...

Great camera!
I have 2
One plastic button newer one (the cheep as chips prize)
And one older chrome button one

So if the selenium cell is a dud the camera is a dud? No manual over ride if you want to shoot sunny 16 or use a hand held meter?

The cheaper/older Canonets are the same - if the light meter fails, the camera won't operate! :(

I have to shake my Canonet 28 from time to time to get the meter up and running again - no idea why - probably a loose connection somewhere.

The later GIII I have finally fixes the meter/camera issue, and the light meter or battery level has no impact on the operation of the shutter - i.e. you can go fully manual on shutter speed and aperture setting.

Nope, dead cell, dead camera!
Well, I suppose you could use the manual aperture and knowledge that the camera is shooting at 1/40th?
But why bother?
The beauty of this camera is its working simplicity!
It's a fully auto camera powered solely by the sun!
