Got up stupidly early today, and headed-out in the cold to capture the first light as it hit Coffee Pot Rock, Sedona AZ.

blimey its been quite round here today

Nice photos buddy ... the colour of the rock is amazing, is it that deep in real life?

id love to see one of these sorts of rocks as a foreground to a sun rise ... if that makes sense?

it must be amazing to have this sort of thing on your door step!!

At first light it's really very very red - and recent rain/snow also helps to make the rock a deeper colour.

I need to scout some more locations to see if any of the formations would make a good sunrise foreground as you mentioned - the trick is working out where you need to be in relation to the rocks, and at what time.

I use a piece of software called TPE - The Photographer's Ephemeris.

http://photoephemeris.com/

AVAILABLE FOR MAC/PC/LINUX and now iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch

It gives you Google Maps views of your chosen location, then overlays sunrise/sunset angles etc.

Here's this mornings shooting location, you can see the Coffee Pot Rock formation to the upper left, and the various angles for sunrise, sun at 7:38 am etc etc from my chosen shooting position.
