X100s? Advice And Thoughts

Did I mention you should buy a Fuji Hamish? :D

i'm seeing people saying that the x-pro 1 is seriously cheap... where? I think we're losing track with the concept of cheap here lolol

I guess the thing is to look at the purpose it will be used for, a general tote around camera, with a leaf shutter , built in nd filter makes fill in flash a doddle. The original 100 has had several updates and focussing speed has improved greatly. If you want it as a street shooter, low light etc then the 100s is your best bet,

However if you want something a tool for more widespread use then, the X pro/Xe1 is the one to go for, as they are now seriously cheap.

Either way you will be a happy chap.

I have thought about the xpro, and haven't entierly ruled it out...
This camera is instead of a leica m9 though, and the only lens I would use on the m9 is my 35mm 'cron. The x100s therefore makes a good bit of sense

A local camera shop last week had a pair of open box Sony RX100 cameras for $475. Deal? Or is it worth shelling out more clams for the 2nd version?

Also, I didn't realize the Fuji X100 had a 35mm focal length (35mm equivalent I guess; I always thought it was a 50). That sounds quite nice. And I gather from earlier posts here that a wide angle attachment is available and that firmware upgrades have solved some problems. B&H has one used for $719. Worth it?

The Mk 2 has a couple of nice extra features such as the hinged LCD and a 'hotshot'. It's a tad bigger and heavier but is supposed to focus better in low light - nit really noticed a problem there. That is about $50 below list and so could be quite attractive. The X100 is a different beast and, as Hamish notes, more akin to a Leica in size / function. It depends what you want it for I guess. The Sony is a great pocket camera but I think the Fuji is too big for that (as is the X20) but the Fuji is a superb alternative to an M9!

I like the size of the X100, Pete. The Sony is too wee I think. Also, the X100 has a viewfinder, which I always want. KEH has several on sale. One at $616 in "EX" condition.

I've looked at the wide angle attachment, would it be worth nearly £300 to gain 7mm?

exactly, if they were saying it could take you from 35mm to 14mm or 17mm i'd have it but to bring it to 28mm, sorry not for me

I had it when I had the X100, and to be honest I didn't think it made three hundred quid of a difference...There were moments when I was glad I had the option of using it, but for the most part I would have to say I didn't notice it. But, unlike you, Davie, I wasn't doing a lot of landscapes.

If I need a wide wide shot i'll use the 1ds with 17-40mm lens OR use the very nice pano function on the fuji. The only issue being it only uses jpeg for the pano but the fuji's jpeg seems so much better than most

Certainly not for me either Davie, I got the x100s on the proviso of having no extra lenses, extra luggage, a fixed all round standardised focal length to go with it, thus to be my everyday to hand camera.

it's such a multifunctional wee thing and coupled with the eye-fi card and a samsung tablet it's brilliant
