X100s? Advice And Thoughts

So you may remember I used to have the original x100 which I loved and loathed in equal measures.

Long story short I'm thinking of getting an 's' until I can afford the Leica I really want.

So, how much better is the 's' than the original?

The original annoyed me in a few ways:

Crap, slow AF
Annoying distance at which you had to switch it to macro which made it even slower
Diabolical manual focus
Silly inaccurate dof guide

Have they made this stuff better? Genuinely?

No, I went for the XE1, thinking I'd use it as a basis for building a system, and sold the X100 to help pay for it. Turns out I miss the X100 more than I've embraced the XE1, and would consider a part-exchange for the X100s. I've read nothing but great reviews about it.

I think Keith has the X100s?

I still have the X100

From what I read:

Crap, slow AF - much better
Annoying distance at which you had to switch it to macro which made it even slower - now focusses all the way without Marco having to be pressed, but you can if you want and shorten the the to focus for close targets
Diabolical manual focus - now has peeking I believe
Silly inaccurate dof guide - supposed to have been fixed

Even the original X100 was much improved by Firmware 2.0 - but the X100s will still be better - latest chip, processor etc etc - same glass on the front

Worth checking Keith for more details

Dan and Davie have the X100s!

I'm not sure if a review from me will be any help but I love the 100s, I wasn't sure I would and I bought it to replace the 550d as a secondary camera to the 1ds.

That however isn't the way it worked out, i use the 100s most of the time and the 'daddy canon' is almost secondary. I do find it annoying when people belittle it as a street photographers camera, because clearly i'm not a street tog at all

If I got one, it would be for work, events and such ... having shot with the x100 I find it really hard not to worry about the AF :/

I can't compare the x100 and the S, as I only have the S and have never used the X100.
However, from what your saying about the bad points from the X100 are certainly not present or are being experienced with x100s. The AF is rapid! Fuji claim a ridiculous 0.07 secs to focus, but in reality nothing focuses that fast.... But it's not far off and mind boggling how quick it really is.
Seriously wouldn't worry about the AF... Tis good alright.

The manual focus has an option to peak the sharp points by displaying them as highlights... This is fantastic! I don't know whether that was present on the X100...

I'll bring mine round H, you can have a play. But I cannot be held responsible for you digging deep in those bottomless pockets of yours. :)

Uh oh, hands on demo from Dan - Hold on to your wallet Hamish! :D

Don't worry too much Dan, I'm paying Garath a visit this morning ;)
Bottomless pockets?? The Nikon d700 is probably going to buy this!! Cheeky bugger ;)
Oh goody, at least Garth will be able to twist your arm instead. Lol.
That's where the old man bought mine from, despite being cheaper on the net elsewhere, there's nothing better than hands on and local support.

I had a go on my dads x100 a couple of days ago and with the latest firmware the auto focus is so much better now, even in low light, think it is as quick as my xpro1. I would definitely check out an x100 first with the latest firmware, you might be nicely surprised, and save some cash in the process, I was so impressed with the improvements that an x100 is now on my shopping list. It's cheaper than buying the lens on its own for the xpro1 and i'll get a second body with it.

But saying that, I'm guessing from previous experience you'll go with the s, ha ha.
You could always get an xpro 1, xe2 or xt1 the first being dirt cheap now, wish I had waited a little longer to get mine

I guess the thing is to look at the purpose it will be used for, a general tote around camera, with a leaf shutter , built in nd filter makes fill in flash a doddle. The original 100 has had several updates and focussing speed has improved greatly. If you want it as a street shooter, low light etc then the 100s is your best bet,

However if you want something a tool for more widespread use then, the X pro/Xe1 is the one to go for, as they are now seriously cheap.

Either way you will be a happy chap.
