Cheap as Chips Challenge! RPF Photo Competition

Now that's a proper looking Camera Hamish! ;)

looking good hamish. Theres a few o them on ata round a pound but no looked for a lens yet lol

Eos cameras for a pound? Yeah, they are everywhere
I like to make things complicated for my self Alan... Your prob better going down the compact camera route for the budget!
Either the early cheap 50's compact route like Darren or the late 90's cheap compact route like dan... It's much easier to find a camera in those brackets than trying to wangle a camera and lens!

So how's everyone else getting on?
My quest for a tenner camera--and again, since I normally shoot film, which most RPFrs don't, I'm trying to find something different for me, thus keeping with the spirit of the challenge--has yielded results, but not entirely satisfactory ones yet. So far I have acquired three cheap-as-chips cameras:

1. Kodak Brownie Hawkeye Flash--$6.99. (This is not so different for me, since it's now my 4th Hawkeye.)
2. Kodak Starlet--$5.00. It takes 127 film, which I've never shot.
3. Balda Micky Rollbox (with "doppel-objectiv")--$5.00. It too, takes 127 film. Got it in the mail yesterday. Shutter seemed to be working fine until I exercised its bulb mode. Now the shutter is stuck open. However, I'm pleased as punch to have acquired this diminutive gem. From what I can tell it is from the early 30's, and its in quite nice condition for a 75 or 80 year old camera.

Still hunting and gathering though...

Ive just had a bit of a windfall in the camera department ....

fujica 605
olympus trip35 (already got one)
canon af35m
olympus mju ii (already got one)

and just to get in on your 127 thang

Bencini Comet s

all for £20 ... now i have some serious choice for my challenge entry!

Does it have to be an old camera or will a cheap use it once throw it away one from a local supermarket count???

what ever you like mate!
as long as its less than a tenner inc the film ... its your call!

No way!!
I have one of them.... In no where near as good nick as that tho..... And i haven't put any film through it yet... Ought to I guess now I've the the film fever :)

maybe Brian or Pete can tell us if that can be deved in ilfosol??

I've never used Ilfosol,...but I have cross-processed a few color films in Rodinal. I did an E6 (i.e., slide film) in Rodinal and I did C41 in Rodinal. I use 1:100 dilution and 60 minutes in the tank, with a 30 sec agitation to start and a 30 sec agitation after half an hour. This has worked for me.

What's the process for black and white called eg ilford delta etc... Ilfosol, rodinol etc ...
I was under the impression that was e6 but I have a feeling I'm wrong ...

E-6 is the development process for slides. C-41 is the development process for color prints. (Or B&W prints intended to be processed in color chemicals, such as Kodak BW400.)

B&W prints can be done in many kinds of developer. Rodinal is just one. So is Ilfosol. So is Caffenol. So is D76. So is,...etc. etc. If I shoot Ilford I'll process it in Rodinal because that's what I like. If I shoot Kodak B&W, same thing. If I shoot Fuji B&W, I'll develop that in Rodinal also. Or Fomapan.

... Just worked it out...
Dan if you read this I've been telling you b&w is e6 ... That's rubbish
As Brian says e6 is for slides
What we were doing is just b&w process ...
It's been a while ;)

... Beat me to it Brian!
Now I know anyway :)
I'm not sure at what stage I got that confused ... I used to work in a shop where we dealt with people wanting to develop film almost everyday and now I think back it all makes sence ... Busted synapses ... Beer ... ? ;)

Don't know what your talking half the time do you Hammy? :D :D :D

As long as I have a Brian to fill the gaps it is yes ;)

It's easy when you pick it up dan, and as I have quite well demonstrated there is a lot you don't need to know :)

chasing film is good fun, the frustration of sticky reels then the anticipation and then the BINGO.

Learning point and as Hamish says 'Every day is a school day' don't do B&W in E1 chems, it don't work.................:D:D:D:D

On a serious point, doing film is great, everyone should do it, it is a good lesson in photography :)

I think film is fantastic!
The thought that goes into the shot, the development with the impatient excitement, and then the results!!
Your right Kev, I think people should learn the principal of photography and at least take film shots, although they may not get it developed themselves and have someone else dev it for them, it's a start.
However, seeing the process done is FANTASIC and an eye opener the ........ The error free process. You feel involved with those shots that have been taken giving the individual, self pride and satisfaction (at least I like to think that...... Why else would film developers do it) :)
